Wow, Neutrino, that was a stroke of luck! Although, I think the long term fix is still unknown. Be sure to let us know how this works out. I had the HVAs replaced a month or so ago, and now about 500 miles later. With warmer weather arriving, I'm not sure mine will tick again for them to replace the head before warranty is out...

Are you going to extend your warranty? (Assuming you haven't done so already)

Spent 3 hours on the phone with BMWUSA, who apparently couldnt do squat. They told me to talk to the service manager at the local dealer. Service manager told me the new fix is a software update. Im thinking, comeon, does this guy take me for an idiot? He also assumed that I was a minor(which is true) but he shouldnt profile or treat customers differently. I paid just as much as all the other people whos cars he's fixing. I guess im just gonna tell him. Look, ill let you do whatever the hell you want but you have your 3 chances(Florida Lemon Law) to get this car tick free. Opinions on this approach?

Like I said in earlier posts BMW replaced my cylinder head as a goodwill gesture. Mine was had a little over 23k miles and warranty had expired last July. There has been many cold days after the repair and no tick whatsoever. I'm extremely satisfied with the repair. Continue to argue and remember "No customer should have to pay for a manufacturer engineering fault, bottom line."

Hmmm
The URL to the TSB that covered the valve lifters appears to have gone missing: http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B110907g.htm Result: 404 not found Is there an updated one? |

Update... valve lifters being replaced today after I showed a video on my iPhone of the ticking. Said they have had to replace very few heads and the lifters usually do the trick. We shall see. I have over a year left on the CPO.
Still curious about where that TSB went, does anyone have access to the new one? Perhaps they updated it? |

I just got my 08 328xi the week before last. Picked it up as a winter car, it's quite cold around here. The second day I had it I noticed the ticking. The sound seems to come out of the passenger side of the motor, and it's frequency increases with rpm. It's not so much intermitant as it seems to be there most of the time.
So I'm going to call the dealership tomorrow and get it in to be looked at. I recorded the sound on my camcorder and blackberry. Thanks for the info guys |

Lifters replaced... along with the "shaft seal for the input flange" per SIB 33 04 08.
The car was vibrating bad as I got on the highway to come home, so its back in for them to check again. I guess I'll have to wait to see if the ticking is fixed or whether I need the head too.. |

Oil viscosity
Try slightly different grades of oil, the hydraulic lifters use the engine oil to work, this may help, I would try slightly thicker oil when warm, the first number is the cold viscosity and the second number on the oil container is the warm viscosity, i.e 5w40 is thinner than 5w50 when warm but they are the same when cold or on start up, the bigger the number the thicker the oil, slight ticking should not cause damage either just a bit annoying, the oil is deffo worth a go, make sure it is still good quality and fully synthetic and only slightly thicker that what you have in, say 5w 50 instead of 5w40, let me know how you get on ok

Nervous
My CPO is over in June. My car doesn't tick at all, but I typically don't take a lot of short trips. If I did, would my car start ticking? Just curious if anyone went from a pattern of no short trips to a lot of short trips and then developed the problem. And how long did it take before the problem started?
I would hate for this problem to start up after my CPO is over, I really dislike that noise. Should I start taking a bunch of short trips to make sure it doesn't start ticking? Or does it just never happen on some cars and I just got lucky? |

That shit is loud! It's embarrassing to have to drive around like that! We shouldn't have to put up with it or pay out of pocket to fix it.
Is it possible to post all of the procedures done to your car and the parts used? You have a really clean engine!
