Bilstein B8 (sports) installation help

Hello All,
Please help. I got some Bilstein B8 (sports) rear and i am trying to install them. I removed the old shock and i need to put the new one on but i am not sure which parts need to be on the shock before i mount it. Do you have some pictures on what goes underneath the dust booth and what goes on top?

Thank you all

here are some pics

i am pretty sure that the yellow bushing goes underneath the boot and so does the washer then you put the boot on. But after that i am not sure what goes on top of the boot. If I put all the parts back it goes past the whole bolt..

I realized the bushing kit i bought also came with a washer that i was not using so i figured it had to go here:

here how it looks from in the car trunk..

Please confirm this is correct, Thanks!!

Congratulations! You got it all correct! It is a nice bilstein feature that the bumpstop goes underneath the dustcover protecting it from the elements. Not as nice as internal to the shock like they do the front struts but nice ntl.

On the rear you could have also used the stock oem cup instead of the black washer that monroe supplied, either way will work.

Yes, as said above. Looks correct. Enjoy the ride! I love my B8 setup on my e87. If the struts ever go on my 335i, Bilstien B8s for sure!

Hi All, the install was very easy once I figured out the order the parts went on the shock. Thanks for the help.

I only did my rear driver side and will do the other side this week. I noticed however that the driver side seems to make a small popping sound when going over small bumps and slow speeds. At high speeds it is perfect.
I am thinking that perhaps I did not tight the bottom enough or does the shock need to break in? I really did not have a good grip to tighten the bottom bolt but i figured that would ok since I did not want to over tighten...

I'll have double check and report back, but other inputs are welcome!!

Thanks - Luigi

Make sure everything is torqued down properly when you go back over it. We layout the specs for the E9X in our coilover install video below which should be helpful.

I was afraid I would break the shock. Very nice video!!! Thanks for getting back to me, appreciated!!!

Would this be the same for the B6 rears?

Man 28ftlb is tight!!! When working from under the car without jacking it up its definetly a lot more difficult. I was able to tight it a lot more. Propably two full revolutions. I have to make sure the top is tight enough as well.

yes b6 and b8 are the same. b6 is just a little longer for normal height springs.

Hi All,

Since doing the installation on my rear driver side I am getting a thump kind of sound, like it is not tight. My rear bottom bushing that bolts to the bottom of the shocked was seized with the rust of the old shock and took a lot of effort to get the old shock out. Could this bottom bushing be causing the issue and can it be replaced? here is a pick that i took, looks a lot worse than i recalled.. lol

do you guys think this is the issue and any suggestion what I should use as a replacement if needed?

Needs to be replaced for sure. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...44-33526768545

You may also want to check out Napa as they seem to have pretty competitive pricing and you can probably get it a lot quicker if it is urgent.

I'm working on this same project using the B6 rears. I would recommend going with the Meyle. I've used a bunch of their products before and felt they are better then Lemforder (OEM) in my opinion.

The New Meyle Shock Mounts came in today. I took the shock out and installed the new Shock Mount and put everything back together. The whole job took me one hour, but I am pretty slow and i had the liner in the trunk already pulled out. I still did not put it back in since I have to do the other side.

That said I went for a quick test drive and WOW, it was very very silent and smooth and no thumps or rattles. I am a happy camper cant wait to do the other side, perhaps tomorrow night.

on a side note you will need a star socket to take the Shock Mount out. I was lucky i had a set.
