Dealer wants $135 for an oil change

At 5k miles I thought I would ask the dealer how much. I figured $50, maybe $60; but $135? If I go to a Jiffy Lube/Pep Boys, should I ask for anything specific?

Yeah, a BMW filter and LL approved oil, which is either Mobil 1 0-W40 or BMW Synthetic 5W30.

oh God... dont go to jiffy lube...

BMW's use a high mileage oil that lasts for 15k miles... Jiffy Lube uses mostly stuff that lasts 3k (mostly), and I highly doubt they carry a BMW filter...

its changed for free when your car tells you to get it changed. Not if you want it changed sooner...

They're free when scheduled, and you pay for unscheduled. Those of us who aren't leasing tend to be more likely to pay for "in between" oil changes.

FWIW, it was $120 when I did it. Try an independent BMW shop, it'd probably be less than $90.

Remember, our cars take 7 QTs of oil. Just for the oil and the filter, you're looking at $50-60. You can also DIY.

you can do it yourself if you buy the filter and the oil....

Sounds about right. Figure quality oil will run at least $5-6 a quart, Filter is $12, plus a little shop time?

If you have a dealership you like, have it done. If you're always buying into the "anti-dealership" bullshit then I'd say do it yourself. It's a pretty easy car to change the oil on. But just the oil and filter cost me $57. Then you figure about an hour maybe? So at my current billable rate it cost me a lot more than $135 doing it myself probably. But it felt good to change the oil at 250 miles and get that cruddy stuff outta there.

I had fun changing my oil, Spent about ten minutes under the car just eyeballing the Burley suspension arms etc...

Actually When I took my Bro 540 in to a Jiffy lube they told me upfront that it would be a little more because of the oil and filter cartridge are pretty specific.

the filter and the oil itself was about 63 bucks. my dealer charged be $84 something for the oil change... independent car shops will do it for 20 bucks if you get them the oil and filter.

I paid $145 for mines. They didn't even have the price in the system yet at that time.

Shoot if you're going to take it to JiffyLube than I would rather just let it go until the free one comes up.

FYI: I bought a quart for over $7 and just last week went to a different dealer and it was less than $6 with the Sales Tax.

This is what BMW of San Diego charged me when I got the first oil change done at 10K miles.

Filter : $12.08
Synthetic oil: $4.05/quart x 7 ($34.65)
Labor $25.43
Waste fee: $1.43
Tax: $3.43

Total: $77.22 --- 45 minutes for oil change and free car wash

Hope this helps.

I don't understand why you guys are all changing your oil at 5k?

BMWs are suppose to be changed every 15k? What benefit is there to changing it earlier? I can't imagine it is that significant.

Why are you guys changing your oil so soon..if ya go before the required service then..don't complain about the price..only person thats happy is the dealer.....if you keep doing this BMW will reconsider the free oil changes if your so hell bent on paying for them....

Jedi only if they are performed on schedule. These guys are requesting them within 1/3 of the recommended mileage for some reason?!?!?!?

Makes no sense. This is not the same crude oil found in your Ford pickup.

How about an executive summary, with 3 pros/cons?
