That's goddamn brilliant I'm gonna go ahead and do this. Thanks for the tips! I've already changed the oil 3x in 8.5k miles--might as well save some money on it.
Yeah, it's awesome. Haven't had anything too big yet that the return shipping refund hasn't covered.

Those interested in DIY oil changes on N51, 52, 54 and 55 do not have to use LL01 oil as LL01 was updated in 2018 to include N20/26 engine test.
You could use oils having MB229.5 approval (which is more stringent than LL01 anyway) and with that readily available oils such as Mobil1 0W40 and Castrol Edge 0W40.
Advance Auto parts runs sale 5qt of oil+ filter.

Uh oh. Did the BITOG guys get wind of this already? Because that's going to mean yet another 40 page long Mobil 1 argument

That said, I think that was at roughly the same time as BMW's rec for N54s changed from LL-01 to LL-01 FE.

Problem with current LL01 spec. is that it bumped oxidation requirements to such levels that 0W oils due to natural acidity are not faring well. However, that does not have anything to do with older engines.
I would not use LL01FE in my vehicle if someone offered me for free for lifetime.
And yes, BITOG is up to date with this.

I used to run mobil-1 synth. Wanted something cool so I started using the Liqui Moly LL-01 FE 5w-30, but it's expensive. It was a spur of the moment thing. I've heard some shops use Fuchs oil. What's y'all's consensus? I'm at 127,000 miles, no leaks other than my washer fluid. ))

I did not see this before.
I run Castrol Edge 0W30 A3/B3 in winter, Castrol 0W40 in summer, and sometimes Motul 5W40 300V during track season.
You have excellent options in Wal mart besides Castrol.
All these oils are acceptable for N51/52, and some for 54/55. I personally would not go Mobil1 5W40 FS, 5W40 FS X2, and 0W40 FS in 54/55 due to very high SAPS levels in those oils.
Quaker State Ultra Durability Euro 5W40 (Has LL01) $18 for 5qt and it is repackaged Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40.
