Coolant temp 257F and limp mode. Waterpump failure?

Hey all -

I'm pretty sure I just experienced a waterpump failure on my 2011 E92. I was driving and then got the yellow coolant light. I pulled over, popped the hood, and checked for any leaks. When I didn't see any, I cranked the heat and put the coolant target to "Track" in MHD, and drove 1 mile back home. About halfway there, it went into limp and the red warning light came on. I managed to get it home right away. I had my data logging running and saw coolant temps top 257F.

So a couple of questions,

1. Would I have damaged anything if I drove with little acceleration under the red light for about 1 minute?

2. This is obviously a waterpump failure, right? It threw the error code 377A.

Do you have any coolant still in the car?

It was a little bit below the min float shortly after I parked it. Should still be some in there I figure.

water pump & thermostat need to be replaced. You can continue to drive for 10 minutes, get the light, pull over and let cool and drive again for a bit. But one of these days it will die and leave you stranded. I would get those replaced ASAP

Your description sounds very similar to my experience. I didn't log any data when this happened to me but did notice that the engine cooling fan was running more and faster than usual - maybe this is by design to mitigate against possible overheating.

I did a cooling system overhaul (pump, thermostat, hoses, ET, fluid and radiator) and all was well. I was at about 90k miles when this happened.

It sounded like an airplane, have never heard it like that before, not even after cruising on a super hot day.

I'm going to try and get it replaced under the class action the waterpumps against BMW NA. Will see if my dealer plays ball, as I'm in Canada but my car is from Illinois.

If it sounds like an airplane, that means your car is low on coolant/overheating. I replaced my radiator with a bigger one a couple of weeks ago and when I bleed the system, my car sounded like an airplane from the fan. I didn't realize I lost a ton of coolant and needed to add a lot more. Once that was done, I bled the system again and it went back to sounding normal.

It's the waterpump.

However, do the WP and Thermostat at the same time. Order the replacement hose that goes between them. It will make reinstall much easier.

Once you realize the bitch-and-a-half that WP replacement is, you'll understand why i suggest both.

Hello everyone I’m experiencing something similar. I have a N55 335i and drove the car for about 15 miles and got the yellow engine temperature warning at 240 degrees Fahrenheit then went about 2 blocks forward and got the red engine temperature warning and the car went into limp mode and asked that I turned the car off so I did that. Luckily I was in the parking lot of my friends apartment complex so I let the car cool off then drove it back home. At every red light I could hear the fans blowing from the engine louder than normal (with no ac or heat on) At home I did a water pump test and everything checked out. You could see the water flowing. I do have coolant in the car. Even though it’s 30 degrees here in Maryland idk what it could be. Any thoughts what it could be if it’s not the water pump?

If your situation was identical to the OP's situation....and you got the same lights...then you should scan the codes and see what pops up. You might have a thermostat issue instead of the actual WP. In either case I'd suggest reolacing both of them together.

This sounds exactly like my scenario. Don't drive it, have it towed to a good inde or dealer and have them check it out, especially if the overheating persists.

For reference, I bought my parts off FCPEuro (best route to go) and paid $350 USD for the labor. Like the guy above me said, do the Waterpump + Thermostat together.
