Motor rebuild shop recommendation
Hi guys, my n54 has been smoking for awhile now. I took the car to Ultimate Bimmer Services in Nashua and they wanted to just swap the motor instead of rebuilding it. They diagnosed the car without doing a compression test or anything. Safe to say I'm looking for a shop to do a rebuild.

Smoking could just be the turbos no? I would go to another shop or at least get another opinion.

Especially as head gasket issues are basically unknown of on this platform. There are tons of threads on smoking from the exhaust on this forum. Bad turbos, bad PCV, Bad VC + PCV issues, etc. etc.
After you drop 4k on your new engine + $$$ for install and it still smokes I hope they refund you the $$$(they will not). Of course they are going to mention while you have the engine out you should replace XYZ which will include the turbos, pcv, vc, etc. Basically everything that can cause smoking. I would stay away from that shop. A Leak down and compression test is inexpensive and quick. Ask them specifically what they believe is wrong with your engine and why a full rebuild/engine swap is required. Ask for specifics, not, "we have seen this before." I would be VERY interested in their answer.

The car is smoking but it's also misfiring. The smoke smells very much like bad piston rings. The car is at 146k atm. It could be the turbo for the smoke but i'm completely clueless at why its misfiring.

I mean I already did the RB external PCV and have a double catch can setup. So I doubt its because of oil getting in through the vacuum side. When I check the piston cylinders they're wet. I also recently had the injectors replaced wit index 12 ones.

My motor seized up on Friday. No metal shavings so hoping maybe just the rod bearings can be replaced. Looking for a place in New Hampshire that can rebuild (or replace if need be) and will work with aftermarket warranty companies. Was thinking Ultimate Bimmer Services or 3D Autoworks. Not sure how many places do extensive work like that around here but hopefully people have some recommendations.
