As I am looking for less exiting time this winter, I contacted my local dealer and obtained the following prices for winter tyres for the 320D M-Sport.
They quoted:-

4 x Tyres 225 R17 91H with Steel wheels with Eagle £970/set inc Vat & delivered.
NB They said with steel wheels I would need wheel trims(?).

Alt.
Alloy wheels with Pirelli £1420/set inc Vat & delivered.

Surprised at 17” The door pillar sticker gives pressures for 16” and cannot obtain prices from Mytyres website for 17”.
Also surprised at Eagle tyres, always thought this was a KwikFit only specialty!
Would 16” wheels be OK for an M-Sport? Can anybody confirm please?

16" wheels will fit fine on a 320d - the basic versions come with 16" wheels as standard and there is nothing different on the M-Sport re. brake size.

Get some second hand OEM 18'' (or new reps) and winter new tyres, would be about the same price as the steels.

Perhaps, but the taller profile of 16" tyres will suit winter tyres and conditions better.

Thanks xenon! I too believe that 16" will be better suited to winter conditions,
but 18" would look better.

I have 18" winters on a set of 18" rep MV3 wheels, that way there is no insurance implication.

Its worth noting your insurer will (most likely) still charge you extra even for fitting smaller wheels as its still a modification.

Mine wanted £120 extra for 20" bling meisters or 16" steelies - makes no odds.


What are eagles? goodyear eagles or chinese crap eagles??

Seems very expensive? My 18" wintrac extremes (y rated) were £600 for 4 and £300 for the alloys new, so £900 all in for a 18" set.

Got back to the local dealer Parts Dept re the above. Apparently the above includes for runflats, 225 x 45 and would be shipped from Germany.
After a little prompting he agreed the Eagles were Goodyear.

When I mentioned that 16" might be better in the snow, he said he could quote for this size also:-

4 x tyres 205 x 55 R16 non-runflat Goodyear Ultragrip with alloy wheels
Price £ 1056/set inc Vat delivered.

205's could be better in the snow.
I did'nt ask price for steel wheels as I was in the motor.

Will check with Mytyres.

My Y rated vredestein wintrac extremes, brilliant, and still brilliant at 18" size. Munch through snow, slush, heavy rain and standing water at speed like you wouldn't believe.

....and only £149 each for 225/40/18.

Set of 4 18"x8J ET34 MV3 reps (as shown) £300 new.

Personally I couldn't have the car looking so crap for 5 months of the year with 16s on.

Agree with above, no need to go 16", buy a nice set of 18" wheels and keep the car looking good for the winter.

Same here, get a good looking set of wheels. Remember, the majority of the time it is cold and wet here with only a couple of weeks of snow covered roads.

I quite agree 16" would look a bit basic, so am looking now at 17/18". I've got 17" on as they came with the motor.

Stick with OE wheel styles & sizes if you can, then there's no insurance charge for modified wheels.

Either buy some replica wheels, or Ebay etc is good for used BMW wheels.

What style are your wheels?

I just had a copy of "BMW Magazine" land.

They are advertising a set of Style 158 with RFT Winter tyres for £700.

Not sure what size that would make them, 16" at a guess? Thinking I should either get something sorted for my motor or end up leaving the car on the drive through the worst of it.

Most replicas are not a staggered setup and I would imgine that driving 18'' replica's actually invalidates your insurance as well if you don't tell them.

Yep - the reason I bough reps was to AVOID the staggered M sport setup!!

You don't want or need super wide rears in the winter and you can then rotate your tyres as they wear. Also the 225/40/18 size (ideal for 8J rim) was readily available in lots of winter tyre ranges, the 255/35/18 was impossible to get last year.

I bought the correct offset for a non staggered 8J E9x which is ET34 all round. (i.e, the same as the front wheel of a staggered setup)

I also notified my insurers and there was no implication unless changing the diameter or visual style of the wheel, whereas they wanted £120 if I fitted 16" steels.

Decent reps are perfectly safe and load tested to the relevant standards, so no issues there. Maybe the finish won't last, but they are off the car half the year so you can get them spruced up every year or two if you want.

Have fitted 17" M Double-spoke 194M. Just missed the 18" M Star-spoke 193M, which IMO are really nice and possibly a bit easier to clean!
I will be sounding out the situation with insurance and check out eBay.

Still thrashing around trying to get an alternative quote to the dealers.
Mytyres unable to quote at present.
Got two other enquires outstanding. They hav'nt actually rocketted back!
Sorely tempted with the dealers Pirelli with alloys. But it is is a deal more than I originally budgeted for.

They are the best mobile fitters around and will beat anyone on price.

225/45/17 Pirelli sottozero winters are £149 each there (highly rated)

or Goodyear runflat winters are £199

But if you go to 18" 8J you can get Continental or Vredestein winters for £150 in 225/40/18.
