I had to use MAF cleaner recently since i was getting shitty MPG, but in the end it was determined that the 91 octane fuel I used for a gaspump not far up the road from my house was shit. Shell V Power fixed that issue right up once I burned through the shit fuel.

The gas any better on base? I'll be in SD this weekend but won't be bringing the e90.

Base gas is always good, I never had an issue while I was at Travis.

Reading that initial post felt like I was watching a commercial for selling MAF cleaner.

Definitely intrigued by cleaning the MAF sensor though. I haven't had to yet in 120k miles, but theres definitely intermittent sluggish moments.

Funny thing with this one: Whenever I use Shell, I get misfire on idle. If I use shitty gas station, no issues. It could be that shitty gas station might have fresher fuel (less water in it or something) since they are higher volume seller (30 cents cheaper price per gallon).

While cleaning it, make sure you spray in the "tunnel", since sensor is in there. Also, use a generous amount of cleaner.

This reminds me - I need to update my old K&N post.

I did a MAF cleaning just for kicks at about 140,000km and noticed no difference at all afterwards. It looked very clean to begin with though.

I did notice an improvement in stability at idle after cleaning my VANOS solenoids though. I had a few minutes to kill while my oil drained so I took them out and soaked them in brake cleaner. I didn't expect it to make a difference, honestly, as they looked quite clean as well. Since then I've had a noticeable decrease in stumbles at idle, so it appears to have helped!

When I first read this thread I thought it was stupid. But being the curious cat that I am I decided just to take a look. Well turns out I didn't have the tool to take it out in my car so I said fuck it and wiggles the wires and flicked it a couple times. I SHIT YOU NOT my fuckin car is running better. It might be because the weather is getting less humid. But I felt a difference. I was amazed haha

MAF cleaner is also known for another fun thing, killing MAFs.

I have noticed differences in cars by cleaning the MAF when they need cleaning. However, I did clean the MAF on the 328 and noticed no difference what so ever. I guess I haven't had enough time to get it dirty yet. There are certain agents that you should not use on the MAF but MAF cleaner will not kill the thing. Just don't get any ideas touching anything in there

No harm cleaning the MAF, it can definitely restore performance and economy. I do highly recommend the cleaning of Vanos solenoids every now and again!

My car has been feeling tired lately and notice its sluggish off the line and low to mid-range power,I had kept up with all maintenance(spark plug change, oil change, air filter change)but still felt it was not as powerful as it once was.
So I did some reading and heard some had restored power just by simply cleaning the maf sensor,at first I was apprehensive as this is an expensive part to mess with....but I just had to try to get my beloved lost ponies back so I blasted it with some maf cleaner.
Went for a cruise to see if this did the trick.....Voila,power is back to its former n52 glory(stay away 335 guys I know my lowly na motor cannot even come close to FI power figures)
I love this motor when is running tip-top shape but even a few lost ponies from ill-fuelling can really make this car run like Shyte.....so clean your maf at you own risk to return this motor to the great motor it is,even tho it's no 335
i kinda feel like im suffering that loss of power on my car and its "up to par" as one would say. what is the MAF im kind of a engine noob with all these terms. and how easy was this to clean up??

The MAF sensor is what meters incoming air to the engine, which allows the ECU to calculate the amount of fuel needed. It is a very sensitive piece itself, but is encased to prevent anything from damaging it. Cleaning the MAF involves spraying it with an approved cleaner.
