Cool that BMW Australia are bringing this in.

It does make sense in the Australian market as we are a total f*cking Nazi country which books drivers for going THREE km/h over the limit. They also confiscate and crush cars if you drive exessively over the limit, spin your wheels or do burnouts.

I agree with the American sentiment in this forum - this Bullshit is the first step towards policing inside your car. I hate governments trying to nanny us and 'save lives'. If they really wanted to save lives they would have banned cigarettes ages ago.

Shame the world is becoming so ridiculously politically-correct these days.

Cool technology nontheless

I experiencee the Speed Limit Info in both the F07 535i GT as well as the F10 523i and it helps a lot.
Especially in Germany, where you have Highways with no speed limit, or often also with 130, 120 or 100 km/h it's really helpful and avoids you driving 200+ km/h in a 130 section.
It's also helpful in cities you don't know yet.

So what are you complaining about? The acutal "warning" of the system? There is no visual flashing or a alarming sound or whatever.
You just see the current limit in the HUD (which can be deactivated) or in the speedometer (which can be changed to whatever you want via the BC button).

In a nutshell the system in combination with a head up display and the "German Autobahn" really helped a lot. And there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the sign of "all speed limits end here" in the HUD in front of you as you go 250 km/h
Some of us live in freaking police states with retarded low speed limits there to be a revenue stream to the state. In my state, they even ban radar detectors, but you are allowed to go down to the store buy almost any gun you want, and carry it loaded in your car. Gotta love some of this crap. What I am trying to say is the draconian speed limits we have here are not about safety, they are about revenue. Now I'd rather take that $700 buy a V1 so it can warn me of speed traps instead, and I can drive like I want with at least a degree of freedom from stupid speed limits.

My tom tom (that I used in my beater that I sold and now is collecting dust, thanks for the reminder to put it on ebay) does this...

Drove me nuts until I figured out how to turn it off.

Will be useful to some, annoying to others...

I see a few flaws in this system already... Unless the local municipalities are on board, even when driving through certain communities there are maybe 1 or 2 posted signs every so often, or none at all... Also, I can see them pulling this information during insurance claims for accidents.. "your guilty, you were doing 75 in a 50, and your car warned you to slow down" BIG BROTHER dipping its hand in yet another part of your daily doings.

Im pretty certain the car will not "read" the speed signs. But, get a signal much like modern dash mounted GPS systems that have the areas speed limits programed in. That is much more feasible, and logical than cameras that "read" signs.

Truth, thats why I believe it will not be camera based, but sensor based GPS signal.

An inexpensive Tom Tom GPS unit can do this today, at least in the U.S...and it doesn't need to read signs with failure prone, permanently installed electronics.

This would only be cool if it could hook up to my radar detector. If I am actually speeding, it beeps when it senses radar. If I am not speeding, the radar detector remains silent.

^ that would be sweet. I don't see an auto manufacturer doing that, but Passport should look into doing it. If a tom tom knows what the speed limit is, surely they could come up with something like that...

I like the idea.

I live in a totalitarian police state with multiple speed limit changes within short distances and speed cameras everywhere. It's f"$%!"g hard to work out what the speed limit is a lot of the time, so if there is any doubt and I see a speed camera I go past it at 25mph. This would help me keep track.

As long as you can set it so it doesn't beep at you.
