Who Says Electric Cars Are Slow?

Here's a video of a 300 hp old Datsun electric car at a drag strip.

I've always wondered about this... Has anyone ever done a full side-by-side analysis of environmental impact of electric versus gasoline vehicles? I remember reading that one of the metals used in the Prius engine, for example, is very rare and difficult to extract, and the damage to the environment from sourcing it eliminates all of the benefits of the Prius. Similarly, I understand that the cost of transporting ethanol, another potential alternative to gasoline, is highly damaging to the environment since it cannot be moved through pipelines the way oil and gasoline can be. So for electric cars, I wonder if the cost of producing the electricity exceeds the benefits versus gas, especially since most electricity is generated through coal-fired plants (in the US at least).

go watch the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car" ... would you really rather buy premium gas at $3/gallon (or whatever you pay) because your to lazy to charge the car?

C'mon.. really... really? I'd gladly plug it in every night and charge for 12 hours then pay $50 a week on gas..

Electric car is nothing new and the speed has never been its problem. All land speed records from 1898 to 1899 were set by three or four French cars powered by electric motors. Unfortunately, currently, the electric energy has to be still stored in batteries, which are heavy for the energy they can hold, do not work well when cold, are slow to charge, and can only be charged that many times before they have to be replaced at a relatively high cost. Electric cars can drag race, but they cannot long-range cruise.

sounds like a great idea but what you don't pay in gas will partially transfer over to your monthly electric bill when you recharge this thing. Or your neighbors with a handy extension cord...

The lack of quick, refillable, portable power is why electric cars always have failed. The aspects of an electric motor are in most ways far superior to a reciprocating engine.

I drove an electric mini and atleast till a 100 it would smoke a 335i. Sadly 0-60 came in less than 4 seconds but dont get me wrong there is nothing like the sound of a i6 twin turbo going threw the gears!!!

I don't think a twin turbo throwing gears around would sound too good.

It is so true. Electric motor is simpler and lighter than any reciprocating internal combustion engine, and it is still simpler than the rotary internal combustion Wankel. Unfortunately, electricity is not very portable in quantities needed for transportation. It is much easier to fill up a fuel tank than to charge a battery. After a fill-up, a car with IC engine will go a few hundred miles before the tank is empty, and will do so summer or winter. Electric car operation range is more limited, depends on temperature, and the battery pack is relatively heavy compared to a same volume fuel tank. Still, even electric cars with present limitations could be used for short distance commuting or for servicing cities.
