Great experience at Solo Motorsports. The tech working on my car was a Prior BMW master Tech for 10 years and let me look at the intake and valves at any point I wanted to.

Also, met jmb85 and hung out / talked shop while his car was being finished and mine going in.

On to the important stuff.

Obviously I have less mileage than the other cars that have gone through with walnut blasting and I think I'm the first N55 in this group but........Survey says...........The N55 MAY, I repeat MAY have less issues with carbon buildup than the n54.

1. N55 (135i) with 47.5k miles
2. Second owner (since 24k | tuned since 32k COBB)
3. First cleaning as the vehicle was a lease prior to me and the service records | history do not mention a prior valve cleaning, only HPFP and breaks | oil under prior owner
4. Clearly I did not have the build up others did and after seeing the lack of carbon I didn't expect to "feel" and difference, so if anything the engine seems a little happier to rev and idles like a champ, although that was not a prior issue.

N55 47.5k BEFORE

Not too bad at all. Almost unnecessary!

N55 47.5k AFTER

Given the pictures of N54's that I have seen at 50-60k I would say the N55 may be better at venting the case and dealing with blow by. Maybe this is just an extreme case of an engine running clean. I dont know!

First of all, big thumbs up to SMS crews! Very pleasant experience with zero complaint. All crew members including Boris and Tony (the master tech) were very professional and knowledgeable. Now, here are some pix of my before & after walnut blasting:

1. N54 at 46,500 miles
2. 2nd owner (since 30,000 miles and running Cobb custom-tuned Stg1 map since then)
3. No oil catch can
4. I immediately felt improvements in the throttle input as I was pulling out from SMS. I also noticed much smoother cold start-up idle as well. Sporadic rpm hunting/stutters aren't completely gone, but reduced to about 5-10% level which I believe is within the normal range for N54. I noticed changed in LTFT for idle-mid rpm range, so I'm going to give a adaptation reset and see if there is any improvement.

Had my intakes cleaned (and new spark plugs) yesterday by Solo Motorsports with a similar experience to tjrcs (above). An encouragingly busy shop with friendly, communicative and professional guys. http://www.e90post.com/forums/images...es/thumbup.gif
My first time there and it won't be the last. (Well it may have been first/last time on Pleasantdale Rd. Understand they are moving to larger premises nearby soon!)

I have a stock N54 at 48.8K miles, no tune, no catch can, 2nd private owner and I was surprised at just how caked-up the intake and valves were. I suspected there might be a bit of Internet-hype about the intake fouling, but no - there was the oily, gungy mess on full view. My little camera & photography skills aren't up to much but you can get a impression. Boris of SMS took some more 'before' & 'after' and I believe he'll be forwarding them to Xtian456 for later posting.
Thanks to xtain for arranging this all, and Tony at Solo MS for doing the work.
Thanks - Happy New Year to all.

Gunked up @ 36.5K

Got my emissions by d end of 2013 and had a chat with the owner of "Happy birthday emissions" in Alpharetta/Johnscreek. He is a fellow member "carlsontheflyer" driving a clean msport e92.

Anyways he did the walnut blast @ 36.5k and below is his thread about it.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=852945

His valves @ 36.5k were dirtier than the 2 45k cars on this thread.
I would like to know why. It is similar to mine with twice d milage.

My ideal milage for walnut based on my search is 45 to 50k until i saw his thread.

Again I am no expert and I'm not part of Solo. I just want to share the information to everybody.

Scheduled for next Thursday so we'll see how it looks. Also need to install BMW OCC, RB PCV Valve and new check valve so hopefully it will minimize buildup in the future. Have the parts, been too lazy/cold so I'll probably pay Solo to do it if it's all apart.

I got mine last week. Unfortunately, I didn't ask for any pictures. I got my car done during work hours so, I was in a hurry. As usual, they did phenomenal job!

All, Solo told me before that this is only until 1/31.
Please call them if you can still make it. If in case you won't be able to make it by the end of the month, Solo told me that they can start another group buy in the next few moths contact them for this.

I just shot them an email to reschedule. Highways look good, but some of the surface streets here are iffy. With the Nitto Invo's on there, even rain can be tricky, I don't want to try snow.
