Thanks for all of the replies guys! After reading through all of your input I decided to just drive it and see what happens.
Drove forward pretty quick facing down the hill and slammed the brakes. Then popped open the hood and removed the plastic intake part held in by two T20 screws (not sure what this is called... can anyone enlighten me?) and saw the spanner sitting at the bottom where I dropped it initially. Then popped in my magnetic tool and fished it out |

I had a similar issue literally 2 weeks ago. I have a Mini Cooper S that is a track toy 90% time... but twice a month, I take it out for a 20-30 min shakedown.
I go to open the car and it is dead as all dead. No juice whatsoever, car doesn't even have enough to crack the windows when the door opens. So I pop the hood to jump off the front terminals and proceed to drop the key behind the motor as I opened the cap to the positive terminal. Well the key took a bounce and didn't end up on the ground, I heard it get caught up but didn't see where it ended up. Took me the better part of a couple hours of jacking the front end up and removing all the lower shrouds to get it. Quite a dumb move by myself... totally ruined my Sunday |

Depending on one's general terminological inclinations, that piece of plastic is called either the intake air duct or the snorkel. |

I had screws fall down there that I had replaced only to see them there the next time I opened the tray up. For future reference, go from behind the front wheel and there are 2-3 8mm points to undo from the front tray. You can usually grab anything that falls from that point with a few taps on the bottom of the tray (after you've located them). Most items end up there just below the motor mount areas.
