VRSF Charge Pipe Touching Power Steering Oil Reservoir Lines - Future Problem?

Good Evening Everyone,

I'm in the process of doing several performance mods to my 11 335i xdrive. Love the car so far buy my brothers C400 is faster so I need to do something about it.

Anyways, I installed the VRSF charge pipe the other day and noticed how the power steering reservoir lines were making a bit of contact with the pipe. It's minimal but after a couple hours of driving, I can actually see a little bit of a wear pattern on the lines.

To all of you with this charge pipe on your car for several years, are you having any leaks on these lines?

I was concerned about future leaks so I took some 3M 2229 mastic pads and wrapped it around the lines where they make contact. It wasn't easy to get in there but I was able to do it. They will add some protection.

Am I overreacting here?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Cheers,

Michael

They don't leak but they do rub. After about 4 years I did see some hose chaffing. I was concerned about it, so I wrapped all my lines in a few layers of fuzzy tape.

I was thinking of adding some nylon braiding to the line, but I don't want to drain the reservoir just for that - it'd end up a big mess. I have seen some Velcro nylon protecting sleeves but they get very expensive for what they are. I've been monitoring the wrap I put over it for the last year and the overall process is very slow. If I need to reapply it once every two years or so I'm good with that.

I done seent this before. Usually the pipe is two pieces. It's frustrating to do, but you may need to undo the silicone coupling, adjust the rotation of each piece, and realign.

However, sometimes things just aren't bent on the mandrel the same and/or the production jig isn't perfectly followed. In that case, I'd follow NBAs advice and wrap it with something… that will keep it happy

if you dont mind taking the hose off, braiding it would be good for couple of years and aesthetically pleasing.

if looks dont concern you and you want cheapest way, ziptie the two together with padding inbetween (including where zipties meet hose) or use extra wide ties. this way they will vibrate together instead of against each other.

I'm pretty sure when I had an N55 it was rubbing and I popped the hoses back into their little clip thingy and it didn't quite rub anymore but I could be remembering wrong

I would be curious to hear VRSF's testing experience with this. Is this something to be concerned about long-term? Thankfully the lines are very easy to replace if needed.

I would say that rubbing of ANY kind should be avoided, period.

Again, during my installation (and I'm xdrive) I could clock the two pipes to line up and rub. However, I opted to explore different orientations and find one that resulted in no rubbing.

I find that this is user installation error if you have rubbing. Not a stab or insult, just something to be mindful of. Have you tried reorienting the two pipes?

They're currently in the stock location. I have not tried to re-orient them yet since it hasn't been a major concern, but this also wouldn't be the first time VRSF has had charge pipe fitment issues. On the F30 and 2-series, people have experienced the early versions of the charge pipe rubbing against the steering column. I might try to fiddle around with it some time this winter.
