Was upgrading to an r90 pump last night from my stock r70, pump puller tool wouldn’t thread into the sprocket all the way. Got about 2-3 threads, as I push in the Jack bolt I hear a pop. Thinking the pump finally popped from the sprocket I pull on it and it’s still tight. But my tool is completely loose. Pulled it out and it had jumped off of those 2-3 threads. Ordered an Amazon pump puller which has reviews saying that it sucks, however it was free overnight instead of 60 bucks for a tool from ecs. The Amazon tool didn’t thread in. Hoping the threads on the sprocket aren’t damaged, has anyone been in the same situation as my dumbass? I’m going to get this ecs tool, hopefully the Amazon tool was just low quality. If not has anyone tapped the sprocket inside the motor? Or do I give up and leave the r70 in it.

Yeah. As someone has had almost this issue happen a few times.. you probably did cross thread your hpfp sprocket.

What would be your plan of action
?335dlci I’m hoping this real tool actually threads but if she doesn’t do I try and fit a tap in there? I guess I have no other choice

That will be a real big tap. M20 is my guess with fine threads.
Go to Ace h/w with that pump tool and find the nut that fits on it. This will tell what tap to look for. I would say cleaning up threads is your only chance. Good luck.

I honestly don't think tapping it is a good idea and also isnt possible if the pump is still in place.....I would replace the gear...

Here is something I have done successfully in the past when in a similar situation. I suggest you go out and buy a small triangular shaped file and use it to dress up the threads of your tool. They make triangular shaped files that are about 5 inches long and around 1/4 inch across. I would not use one larger than that. Then try threading it in again. But, don't use a lot of force. If it does not go in don't force it. With the cleaned up threads, there is at least a 50 / 50 chance it will clean up the threads in the sprocket. Just don't force it.
I see on your tool that the top of the threads are square. Use the file to sharpen the threads some (not all the way to a point). Only do that on the first two threads. That way the first one or two threads become the guide for the rest of the threads and the rest of the threads do all the work. Also put a little oil on the end of the tool when you go to use it.
