How could you tell the job was done properly apart from the car running well? Did they replace just the bolts or the entire vanos unit? The open recall does not apply to my car but I know the bolts have sheared.

I just had this “done” at my dealer, it took 4 days along with a state inspection. When I got home I pulled the engine cover which looked suspiciously untouched.. dirty
They hadn’t touched a thing.
2 years ago I had the whole valve cover replaced for the stupid pcv valve + tiny oil leaks, at the same dealer..
I have the video of pulling it off and looking around and how it was obviously completely untouched.
I’m guess complain to BMW USA?

That makes me want to take a paint pen to the valve cover bolt heads so I can more easily see if they've actually opened it or not. So far my local dealers both say "no fix available yet".

This is why I'm hesitant to take it to the dealer. Now it's your word against theirs.

AHA the recall process is only to inspect it.
And replace if it's completely broken.

It was filthy because they'd only put a camera through my oil cap to inspect.

The recall process is not remedied - they are only fixing BROKEN cars and taking data.

They forwarded me to the mechanic in the shop - he said to expect a recall WITH a fix to be dropping in the next few months. Then they will go through the whole deal and if the bolts are shredded, reseal the oil pan.

As of now unless it's fully broken, they'll just take inventory of how many bolts you have remaining and report

That's ridiculous. The whole point of the recall is to REPLACE the bolts regardless of whether they're broken because the wrong bolts were used in the first place.

It makes sense that they don't have to drop the oil pan if no bolts were broken but just to check if they're broken or not and not fixing it is a pointless exercise.

If this is indeed the final solution from BMW this should be reported to the NHSTA. I’m skeptical of your dealer though, as the web portal for BMW recalls still shows that the remedy is not available…

NOT sure that BMW & NHTSA are on SAME/ Correct Page here. Attached are current 23V-707 NHTSA recall pdf, and RCRIT-14V176 pdf. Note statement on page 5 of the "Repair Procedure" of the RCRIT, pdf page 10:
"If any of the bolts were loose or broken during this procedure, the VANOS assembly will need to be replaced. Refer to step 14."
Then refer to pdf page 8 of 23V-707 where it states:
"Description of Remedy Program : The four VANOS bolts will be replaced."
In the 2014 RCRIT, clearly the entire VANOS Unit (NOT just the bolts) was to be replaced if ANY of the 4 bolts securing it was Broken or Loose, as illustrated in the Photos. There is NO mention of VANOS Unit Replacement or inspection for Loose/ Broken bolts in the NHTSA 2023 document.

That is how I feel about BMW as a whole since they have know about this for quite some time.

VANOS Recall

Hi
My N52 is at the dealer for the Recall

Only 162 K Kms ( 100 K miles )

Good news
They found badly bent bolts, none broken

Bad news
additional parts required due to damage backordered for a few weeks

Good news
It got in before it failed, they did not recommend reassembling and driving before the replacement - failure was imminent

What parts are "backordered"? VANOS Units? Did Dealer find "Bent" bolts on BOTH Cams?
BMW LISTED price on those VANOS Units ~ $600 each. It's NOT just a matter of 4 new bolts per Cam with loose/ broken/ bent bolts.

The REAL question is: "What exactly is to be replaced when bolts are Broken, Loose or Bent", and what are the terms of the RCRIT or agreement with NHTSA on a "Practical Fix"?

If you get ANY Invoice or Itemization of NEW PART$ from the Dealer, please provide a Scan of that Invoice. This is NOT a "New Issue". There was a recall in 2014 (see RCRIT attachment ABOVE). Human Tendency to "Kick Can".

BMW GRAND RIVER IN KITCHENER HAS THE CAR

I will post the results when they are done with it - Parts are backordered in Germany - description was not clear other than they were no charge

The Eccentric shaft position sensor had oil and corrosion, they are charging for the part (800 cdn) BUT only 1/2 hour labour since they are in and going back ito do later when it does go - ugh

This badly bent bolt line sounds like a load of BS from the dealer. I know for experience they don’t bend. The caps of the security torx bolts shear off and then majority of the bolts break leaving parts in your oil pan!

Ask to see the “bent bolts”. Or a photo of same. They are likely wiggling out of pulling your pan to remove the faulty sheared and broken bolts remnants.

The more I learn about this recall, the less I like it. I was one of those who pushed NTSA for the recall and I replaced my faulty bolts myself a few years back. I’m pretty sure that the last thing I want is some clowns tearing back in there to kite up a dealer service bill!

And BTW, a genuine BMW ESS is about $400 US for the part.

And Canadian prices are EXPENSIVE. I’ll bring parts across the border when I visit my aunt in Canada. Saved her quite a few $$$ on her F25.
