Yup, check this regularly - no sign of any oil on this. The car is under AUC warrenty and i'm not sure what BMW would do if i turned up and said my MPG is rubbish can you check the car - apart from charging me a ludicrous amount to 'take a look' ofcourse

Wow – thanks for all the comments and feedback everyone!
In response to a few of the comments, if I was to follow my heart and not my head I would rushing down to the dealers and purchasing a nearly new 335d. The X1 which I have tabled a good deal on is sitting at £30k with all the additional extras I am wanting but a look through the AUC yields a good number of 335d’s which are under a year old and less than 10k miles for 28.5k upwards – that £1.5k buys a lot of fuel, even at today’s prices. If I have any concerns over the 335d it is whether or not I could live with the auto box – for years and years if anyone asked me what my dream car was (realistic one) it was always a 330d but finding a decent one under 1 year old with a manual gearbox is excruciating! My dealer has one in its group but its overpriced and comes with the Oyster Leather of which I am not a fan. It is very good to know that the consensus is that the 335d would attain its combined mpg figure based on my daily drive although a 330d getting 50+ is going to take some serious consideration, I suppose the next step for me is going to have to get my dealer to organise for a 335d to be transported in for me to try as they have none available and drive it back to back against the manual 330d. |

The gearbox, mmmmmm, hand on heart, yeah most of the time the auto is good, it's nice to not have to do anything but if you're the kinda person who can really drive I think you'll miss the manual. I know I do.
What I couldn't answer is "does a manual box suit a big diesel" ? This is my first auto and my first diesel..... |

45mpg out of a 335d? On what planet is THAT!? God only knows how you can get 40mpg on anything other than long motorway drives.
Mines avergaed 33.2 over the last few thousand miles, which is a 20 mile commute into cambridge, and then town work. Since its a slushbox, town driving kills the economy, a 330d manual is significantly better on fuel if you do any stop-start whatsoever. I was skeptical of the autobox, I'm a manual anorak, but the torque on them is enormous, they pull from tickover and they just pile on speed regardless of gear, shifting almost becomes a moot point. The only real issue with a slushbox over a manual is if you can't pre-select the gears when you exit corners, which the paddles allow you to do, so you don't get the gearbox shuffling about deciding what gear it wants unless you're feeling lazy. 428lb/ft sort of makes the gearbox a bit redundant, because any gear, any speed, the thrust on offer is epic, and very few things on the road can keep tabs on them. |

I used to drive a manual 330d and loved it, great box, awesome car, 47.5mpg most of the time.
Now on my second 335d, and despite being initially sceptic ap about the auto box, I now love it. There ard distinct advantages to bring able to keep both hands on the wheel whilst overtaking, and going around bends. Perhaps if I drove track I'd be inclined to choose a manual. The thrust of the 335d really is hard to resist, really no point to worry about fuel economy, most equivalent performance cars do around 20mpg, I average 35 and most of my driving is rural moderate distances 30-60 miles each trip. The other thing you need to factor in are tyres and brakes, you'll get through more! Owning a 335d is an indulgence, though relative compared to an M. For 25k you could find a nice M5 of course.... |

Oh, and don't bother turning off DTC. In the dry, you need to be going licence bustingly fast to make it slide, and in the wet, it just squirms and wriggles everytime you drop the hammer.

If I was the OP I'd go for a 318d / 320d. He's obviously a frugal chap, otherwise he'd be driving at 90mph on these deserted motorways he describes?
If you got a 335d or even the 330d you'd always be wondering how much better economy you'd be getting with a 4 pot. |

The autoboxes today are so well suited to the Torquey Denzil motors.
Be crazy not to get a 335d because of it.

I had to stop for fuel on my way back to Stafford and i hadnt reset the trip thing for a while as I joined it was 50 - 60 mph speed restrictions.
I stuck it on cruise and it came up as 61mpg. As you know that part of the m6 is flat, with those overhead cameras. Then it ended and I nailed it down that long straight before going up that slip road that meets the toll. I went a bit nuts to be fair but the mpg fell back down to low 40s. |

some people complain that with a diesel you have to keep swapping cogs to stay on the power. Derby to Blackpool on a busy M6 motorway via Southport yesterday 49mpg (4 up ) not in a rush & on the way back 39mpg on a relatively clear motorway. Average speed was 22mph from Blackpool tower car park to the start of the M58 then ended up at 73mph when we got home. Not a lot passed me but still got 39mpg. Only place you will get really decent mpg is on the motoway in 6th gear. |

That's very true, you don't need to be going at 55mph to get high MPGs. But like has been said, the key is not having to keep stopping... which in this country is pretty damn impossible, unless like the OP you commute at night!
But I love being able to get in the 330 and think "right, what should I do today, muller some golf GTIs off the lights or go for the 50mpg thing!" Very versatile car.

330d's aren't allowed in this thread mine would do 50mpg ( looking at the needle) at 30ish on a flat road in 3rd but keeping a steady 30 for any lenght of time is impossible. I had a volvo D5 (chipped of course) that had a digital "instant" readout that would do 83mpg at constant 30 on a flat road but there is nowhere you can do that for any length of time & then a hill comes along that will knock it right down to 25mpg because there is no momentum to get half way up the hill. |
