Drivetrain vibration driving me nuts!
Hey, there's a drivetrain vibration from my car. Comes in around 60mph and goes away the faster I go.
No, It's not the wheels/tires/balancing. I've had the wheels balanced 3 times. Even had all 3 of the 4 wheels unbent/straightened ($500) and then balanced right after again. My center support bearing was replaced last year when we did the clutch. Also, I've had the center support go bad before and the symptoms were a bit different. The vibration does not go away if I put the car in neutral while coasting. It's also not related to the brakes, I had all new rotors put on trying to chase the vibration issue. I'm running out of ideas and money. Any ideas? |

How old are the tires?? I had a similar problem and after replacing them it fixed my problem. Visually my tires were fine but physically they were dry rotted. I don't daily my 335i so the tires got bad after 3 years of inconsistent driving/sitting.

Driveshaft u-joint bad? Axles? How many miles on them?
Do you have another set of tires you can try? I chased a vibration for months after repeated wheel balancing and wasting money on two alleged road force balancing only to have my alignment shop show me that I had an out of round tire. It balanced perfectly by everyone who tried, but there was an obvious high spot on the tire. I swapped out wheels/tires for a spare set and the car is smooth now. |

UPDATE:
So I tore the car all apart for other work that had to be done and when I put everything back together, the vibration magically disappeared? The work I did was strut mounts, coilover adjustment, and metal valve cover upgrade. Now, I swear the vibration was from the rear/center of the car as it wasn't shaking my steering wheel at all. Also, my strut mounts were so seized & torn that they were throwing off my alignment as well has making all sorts of noises while steering. I really don't know how this insane vibration went away after this but I'm not complaining. |
