Loss 5 psi of boost after intercooler install
I have a question which is really bothering me.. I bought the spearco/turbonetics intercooler, after the install i took it for a test drive and noticed that my boost gauge was reading only 9 psi peak as oppose to the 15psi peak i was running before the install. I know that you should expect some loss of pressure due to the bigger intercooler, but not such a big loss. power did fall off a bit but not much. Is this something to worry about or is it normal??? I upped the boost about 2psi and if felt a little bit more powerful than b4 which was expected... Somebody please help........

If there's no leak you disconnected something accidentally or the intercooler has something clogging the inlets.
Smokes only going to get you so far, I'd recommend using an actual boost leak tester to pressurize the system. |

What tune are you using?
5 PSI is a lot, how did you check for leaks? Visual check doesnt cut it.... Figure this, as the car sits there there is no pressure(just atmospheric pressure), when you pressurize the system, things expand. Check your couplers and fittings AGAIN. |

Like what??? Where do I get that boost leak tester??? The smoke test was done the smoke came out of the air box and we did not see smoke anywhere else.. The reason i am nervous is becuz i upped the boost and i dnt wanna over rev the turbos. My guage now says 12.5psi max so that means im probably pushing upwards of 17 psi at the turbos right?

I would recheck every single coupler from the intake to the IC and back to the engine. if all is tight then you're fine.

You should actually have LESS pressure drop if it is a good aftermarket intercooler. You turbos should actually have a LOWER cycle duty to hit your desired boost pressure, due to better after-cooling.
Pressurize the system using a boost leak tester, it may not even be those two couplers, and smoke machine puts out a few inches water column, NOT enough to test for BOOST leaks, but good enough for the VACUUM/INTAKE side. Are you using JB3 or Procede? |

Defintely not normal....I only saw .5 drop after I installed my HPF intercooler...If your seeing 5 psi like others have stated there is something leaking and not connected...Take the intercooler apart and re-install to check where the problem is...

yes u need to pressurize the system. I made a thread on this years ago.
smoke test wont tell you squat most likely. Good for finding exhaust leaks though!

NOW you tell me what does me having the Dinan tune have anything to do with anything.... Take your time I'll wait.
As for everyone else who is giving me USEFUL information thanks..... Meanwhile back at rhe ranch, is there a possibility that the intercooler is no good, bcuz I have done just about everything except put back on the old intercooler and see if the problem still exist... BTW where would I get the tools to do the pressure test since the smoke test is virtually useless in this case???? Again Thanks for all of your help please keep it coming as i need to solve this issue ASAP....

So do some "regression testing"...put your stock intercooler back on and if the boost is where it should be, then the problem is definitely in the new unit. It might even be a leak in the intercooler itself, not just a coupling. Also, try using something else to measure your boost psi just to be sure you're not getting a false reading.
And...if all else fails, call the Dinan guys and tell them what's going on - see if they have any insights as to what would cause the reduction in pressure. After all, they make an FMIC as well, and it is matched up with their Stage 3 software. Could be something in that stage that allows for the extra capacity in the larger intercooler. Lots of possibilities, so try things one at a time until you hit on a cause/solution.
