Snuff,

I recently added shims to both roof alignment pins on my 2011 335is.
The shims come 4 to a bag and are 0.5mm thick.
On my car, the driver side required three shims. Two shims were used for the passenger side to stop the clunking noises, so I need two bags of parts.
You can use a 13mm deep socket to remove the alignment pin. I used a 13mm open end box wrench with no problem. No need to remove the liner.

The pic is of the passenger side pin.

Regards,
SR

how do you know how many washers you need? Can you feel the conical part stop moving? is it that you have to drive and test it each time? How did you get to 3?

THanks!

You can't know, get your wrench, some washers, go to a bumpy road and start adding one by one until the rattle stops. It's rally easy and fast to add a washer. If you add more than 2-3 washers on one side - listen to the sound of the mechanism while locking, if you hear metal scratching or the motor struggling to lock you better remove some.

You may as well do a leak test before the next rain...

In the end it was the small hinged plastic squares at the rear of the parcel shelf, which rise up to allow the roof arms to extend. Can't see those? No, they're hidden - that's why. Here's how you check. Start to open the roof and stop when the roof is stacked and the rear deck is about half way up. The plastic squares can then be got at. Wiggle and flex them slightly - don't break them! One of mine creaked when moved. That was both the creak and the rattle that had been annoying me for a whole year. A drop of silicone or WD stopped it completely.

But it taught me a lot. In trying to find this rattle, I learned how to lube and service the whole roof, how to dismantle and re-assemble the boot and back seat assemblies and a whole lot more. So I got to know the car a lot better.

I hope that this will help some poor soul out there.
Would you be able to post pictures of the small hinged plastic squares? I tried using washers and for the front and that helped, I also lubricated the seals and that seemed to help but I'm still having a rattle from the rear driver's side.

Anyone use alternate washers?

I need to do this fix and my local BMW dealer doesn't have these in stock and will take a few weeks to get in.
Has anyone sourced any non-BMW washers? I read that they are .5mm thick. Can anyone tell me the diameter of the washers and the hole diameter?
Thanks,

Hardtop Seals

I am new to this group, but I figured this would be the area to post this question.

I have an 07 325i SE and my seals on my hardtop were not really taken care of from the previous owner so I am trying to either get new seals for the roof or condition/replace.

Is there a way to replace the seal at the bottom of the back window that seals to the trunk of the car? Mine seems to have lost the adhesive to the glass and slid up under the window. Hoping this is a quick fix as I have seen other E90/91 rear seal replacement options for super cheap.

Thanks for the expertise in these matters

My '07 335i e93 rattles really loudly also but the source of it seems to be very spread out front to back and underneath the headliner. It sounds like a box of wooden crates in a truck bed if that makes any sense. I don't wanna remove it just yet cause I haven't found ANY write-ups with a step by step to remove the headliner. Is there anything underneath the headliner that requires some sort of plastic retaining clip which may have come loose?

First, you can verify if this is the particular rattle by applying slight upward pressure on the hardtop right next to the windshield and near one of the two latches while going over a bump that you know would have caused the rattle. If that silences it, then this fix should work.

The way it was described to me is that you use a deepset socket to remove the conical locating pin on part #6 in the following diagram.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=54_0365

Then reinstall it with one or more of the 54377148164 washers installed as a shim. Mine was on the right latch and required 2 washers to take it from rattling like mad over every little road imperfection to dead silent even over big bumps. I think the washers come in a bag of 4. These are the leftovers.
Just wanted to add my thanks!

I had the dreaded rattle / knock coming from my 2011 E93 and this fix seems to have sorted it!

I used some M8 washers from Toolstation @ the crazy price of £1.95 for 100

https://www.toolstation.com/stainles...-washer/p30258

Took it for a test drive today on a road that had previously been a nightmare. This time, silence!

Wait you put in firmer springs, firmer shocks and harder subframe bushings and are wondering why it rides shitty and rattles more?

I actually lowered my E93 a long time back, and un-lowered it about a month later the ride was not good for sure, only thing worse is my sons 06 E90 330xi, the front end on those first couple years xi's is possible the worst suspension I have ever experienced on the road, worse then my E93 was lowered and his car is stock.

I am having this issue right now in my M3... I will try to do what you said tomorrow morning and maybe post some pics.

Real loud rattle coming from rear passenger side. I haven't opened the roof yet to inspect, but opened the trunk at the gas station, noticed a plastic cover for the roof contraption when the top goes down in the trunk. It was loose unlike the one on the driver side and may be the issue for my rattle.
I need to do this investigation once the weather improves (July in the UK &#128584, but the o/s/r. The wife's car has a constant rattle although it sounds more like metal to metal rather than plastic though 🤷🏻*♂️

Is there a possibility for someone to post pictures of where the shims go as my e93 makes a rattle noise from the rear quarter by the latches next to the rear windshield/screen

I don’t know that these shims can be used in the rear. I think these are specifically for the front latches. I think there is something in this thread where a user had a rattle in the back and they described how they found it.
