unfortunately, i dont have recent pics of the JUST the hood, and you cant notice the cracks until you actually are within eye level with the car.
if you guys were me. how would you approach the dealer again? keep these things in mind. my friend is the service adviser, he told me if i can pin it on bmw hed gladly bring it up to the upper management. the tech is a buddy too. he stated there was no heat or light exposed to it. no reason for him to lie. what im trying to do is push the bad paint job on bmw and find out IF the car was repainted indeed. help me out guys. if you were me.

whenever I've brought my car for service the SA comes out with a clip board and a piece of paper with a picture of a 3 series on it and goes over the whole car checking for scratches, dents, ect and makes notes on the condition of the car at the time of me dropping it off. That way when I pick the car up I can't say "hey you scratched my bumper" when he already noted that the scratch was there when i dropped it off.
Did they not do that when you brought in your car? |

go get the paint readings. If the hood is outrageously more than the rest of the car, then you MIGHT have some backing here:
1- hood was repainted while in BMW care over the 6 days 2- hood was repainted PRIOR to you buying it, of which you would have no clue since you are not a detailer, nor have a PTG to use (people dont walk into a dealership ready to measure paint on a new car normally). But then again, its a back and forth battle and a he said she said issue. only way for you to win to to keep pressing the fact and hopefully the dealership will give in. If not, I think hoods are repainted for about $500, equal to most deductibles, so dont claim it. This happened to a Ferrari I was working on...well, it already happened, so all I could do was use a paint work cleaner on it prior to waxing, no polishing...sucks because it stood out like a sore thumb! Nothing you can do except repaint, so dont even try |

This is nucking futs!! Just to be clear - this absolutely did not exsist when you dropped the car off? Seems to be very obvious, but maybe not if wet, like you said. It sucks because there is no determination of how it happened and likely turns into a he said, she said. I would go with the overly nice approach and go for good will. I think the angry approach with this would quickly make you lose out - just my opinion. Hope you get it worked out man!

now that i've analyzed the damage, it appears a miniature hulk has smashed your hood.

This "take it back" is ridiculous.
Take EnviousEric's advice - he knows what he is talking about. Beg, borrow, steal a PTG and measure the paint on the doors, trunk, roof and hood. In addition, measure the fenders in a few areas - some close to the hood. Post the results back here and we'll go from there. |

I just looked at his car. It looks like the hood has been repainted. There is little to no orange peel on the hood, which BMW is known for. The rest of the car has normal orange peel. I also checked under the hood where the factory stickers should be and it is missing. I compare his 335 versus his roommate’s 328.
John is having his friend check the paint with a PTG to make sure also. |

If the stickers are missing then it sounds like a replacement hood rather than a respray. Now the question is when it happened. |

That really sucks. Assuming the dealer denies any responsibility, (which they probably will do) and you don't push back too hard so your friends don't get into trouble. Can your friends at the dealership get you the hook up with a body shop?

the hood was indeed repainted. PTG is much higher at hood then rest of the car.
when this happened is beyond me... but stated by the autobody guy. theres no paint since 1995 that will have this effect especially on a 2008 car. they dont even sell paint that will do this anymore.

If the paint craze is due to possible heating I would maybe ask to your friend at the dealership to see the work area/bay the car was work on in. It is possible that while the car was on a lift and raised up high it could have been positioned very near a cieling mounted heating unit. If the hood was raised while on a lift it could place the hood even nearer to such a heating unit - anyway, maybe one other place to look for a heat source.

You said that you brought the car to the dealer "pre washed" (your words). Then you said that when you picked it up it was dirty and you has to "wash rain and dirt off" (which is why you didn't see the problem right away). So, are you saying that during these few days at the dealer's the initially clean car collected a significant amount of dirt?
(I don't understand the significance of rain in this case. Rain does not make a clean car dirty. Rain only exaggerates the appearance of the pre-existing dust and dirt.) |
