got my new car and everything yeah.. getting gap cover tomorrow £205 for 4 years @ £20k seems reasonable, but toying with tyre insurance too..

i know this is a contentous subject.. what do people think, should i bother?

looking at £319 for 3 years... tyres average out @ £185 per corner.

i've had 1 puncture ever in 10 years of driving... probably due a few

Think I remember reading that on average you will get 1 puncture for every 100,000 miles that you drive

OP, i got tyre insurance as i have had a few punctures, and i was going from 17s to 19s, so i thought it might be useful. But i'm probably an anomaly and if you don't get many punctures then i'd leave it.

Presumably there's no way they'd pay out for worn tyres?

I mean, it would be a crying shame if, by chance, you happened to get a nail in one tyre just as it needed replacing anyway, thereby halving the cost of your new pair of tyres...

Surely, you can't be suggesting . . . . . . .

And yes, as long as the tyre is legal, you get a brand new replacement. At no (further) cost.

According to the Sales person at Rybrook, that is just what some people do - put a nail in the tyre as it's approaching the limit. BMW knows it happens, and according to said Salesman, they make a loss on each policy they sell, particularly with RFT's and 19's (which are dearer to insure anyway).

I didn't take out the insurance on my previous E91, having only had one puncture in 30 years or so. 3 months into ownership and I burst 2 RFT's in a pothole. 20:20 hindsight says I should have taken it out!
Hence, with this one, I have taken the plunge. After all, at BMW prices, one puncture and it's almost paid for itself, never mind the tyre wear. Over 4 years, with interest free payments over the year - no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Now, where's that nail box . . . .?


Sytner's and Cooper's don't offer it for some reason.
Rybrook was happy to take my money (!), even though I didn't get the car from them.

did a bit of research on tyre insurance and tbh they are just loss leaders anyway, if the insurers carried these to solely make a profit tyre insurance wouldn't exist any more at it certainly isn't a profitable business!

I am surprised you can insure tyres.
It seems far too easy to just put a nail in it and get a replacement.
How would they ever know? And even if they knew, how could they prove it?

One thing i do want to ask is that the salesmen at the BMW AUC dealership said the insurance covers non RFTs too if you have them. Is this true? I believed him at the time....

I took it. But, negotiate a discount. I paid about £200 for it - My rear tyres are £350 quid a pop so it's worth the extra money to have a bit of security against having to pay that!

I would imagine so, as all they do is change the tyre for a new one - there's no repairs going on, just brand new, nail free rubber

I got an insurance document with mine, maybe have a read over the T&C's? I think I still have mine if you need me to check

Wrong. They can try to repair them now, both run flat or not. there are some rules around this, but it's not a gratis free tyre regardless.

Tell them that and you might get one. I'm not sure how they'd prove you otherwise
