I'm having a shop replacing the #6 injector but they said they don't code it.. I was wondering if any one knows the average cost at the dealership to code 1 injector and would they also update my cars computer to latest software?

Rather than spending money for BMW dealership to code it for you id recommend getting a kdcan cable, a tablet , and protool and coding it yourself. It can b e done relatively easy , and will most likely cost less than the dealership for these things. I use a 30$ amazon fire tablet and it works great. If you get protool you can also do a ton of other things that may or may not be of interest to you .

So if I have a iPhone or android can I do this or does it need to be tablet

If you have an android phone that would work as well with the kdcan cable and proper otg adapter . I have an iphone , they may or may not have the app available for that . I just use my android tablet because I also use it for using MHD to tune/monitor as well . The tablet was purchased specifically for the car in my case .

I’ve never used a tablet to code stuff before, but if you have a PC or Mac you can use INPA to code injectors. For a Mac you can use VirtualBox or VMWare to run Windows in a virtual machine.

Pro Tool app on your phone + D Kan cable....and you are ready to go. Or an old laptop with INPA on it (free from bimmergeeks).

It's a 2 min deal....I wouldn't think it would cost much to have an Indy shop do it.....if you wanted to go that way.

Said $200 for the code I was like what? For one injector ? Didn't seam right but I downloaded the protocol on a android phone a bmw program app also called bummer code for bmw and mini I need to get the d kan cable any suggestions on what are good in expensive ones

Yes but I'm looking at amazon and what cable do you use to connect a android tablet to the phone the reviews I saw we're not the best and cant find more options

I got the D-Kan cable with the standard USB end, and then used a USB to micro USB adapter. I'm pretty sure the Android tablet uses the micro USB type plug.

It’s called an OTG cable, the cable to connects the Kdcan cable to the tablet.
You also have to pay for the app.

I'm going to be using a android phone to attempt this I found a $30 cable with the usb to phone adapter on amazon.. I have the app protool downloaded it hasn't asked me to pay for anything yet. I also have an index 9 injector going in. Will the app tell me what coding is needed this is my first time so any extra knowledge will be great thanks

what engine do you have? from my understanding you don’t have to code an injector on the N52 engines...

If you are in fact N54, the code is actually on each injector. It is imprinted on the left below the scan code in a series similar to this

The codes are typically unique to each injector.

If the codes were not recorded on an invoice or receipt, you will have to remove the plastic engine cover to reveal the codes on the replaced injector(s)

Downloading installing inpa now
Hopefully all is well. Now I have questions about the valve cover I have a brand new one with gaskets I've done it before but is it safe to tighten by hand idk how much torque is applied when just tightening by hand so I don't wana crack the brand new one also don't want to buy the expensive digital torque wrenchs. I think I cracked my cover or it was old but either way it's cracked after doing the gasket. If anyone knows how tight it should be done by hand let me know Thanks!!

"hand tight" is very subjective....that's why they make torque wrenches.

If you've worked on a lot of cars, you will eventually figure out how tight stuff needs to be based off of experience.

Nobody is going to be able to tell you "how tight by hand" it needs to be.

Yes your very right I'm gonna settle for a free rental from auto parts store or just bite the bullet and add another tool the box since it seems I'll be needed it more.

I actually have a 3/8" in ft lbs and 1/4" inch lbs from HF. They are actually pretty decent. I have a Snap On dial type torque wrench but the clickers are nice in tight areas.

I was going to say that harbor freight has torque wrenches for dirt cheap and they work really well. Sometimes you can find a coupon to get one for around $15 or less if I remember right.
