DIY - How To Rebuild Your E9X N52 Engine In Your Garage

My BMW 325i E90 with the n52b25 engine was burning oil at about 1L/1000kms all the way down to 1L/300kms over the last few years. I tried everything to fix it (new CCV, seafoam piston soak, liqui moly oil stop, engine flushes etc) Nothing worked, so I bought a wrecked/burnt donor engine sight unseen off EBay to take my time rebuilding before swapping it out with the one in my car.

I am already done the rebuild/swap and will release a few videos every week as they are edited. I wanted everything completed so I could show you everything that went well and what went wrong so you can learn from my mistakes. It will save you a ton of time and $$$ hopefully.

Prequel: If your n52 is burning oil I suggest you start here and try a few things first:

(Almost) all the parts and tools you need for the rebuild:

I've added links to the tools you can view HERE:

Engine rebuild process starts here:

I am calculating how much this cost to do... but will make a complete video about that in the future.

Cool, I look forward to watching the vids.

If your engine was burning so much oil, are you planning to service or replace the Catalytic Converters?

Its a good question! I took a look in the cats when I had the engine out and they seems fine. The honeycomb was not clogged or blocked up. But it may also be because the owner before me had replaced them. I soaked them with hot water and dish soap, but I don't think it did anything tbh... they were fine.

Were you made aware that the catalytic converters were replaced before you bought the car?

No, after I bought the car, someone told me it has a BMW performance headers and exhaust. The spec sheet says it did not originally come with these so I assume 4 years ago, the guy before me put them on.

Next Video: Checking the piston rings if they were out of spec... this is the real reason why the n52 burns so much oil or has bad oil consumption.

The next part of the n52 rebuild is to clean and lap the valves.

I didn't replace the main bearings as the conrod bearings looked well within spec. I suspect the engine was rebuilt as some point. Just new rings and valve stem seals/gaskets etc.
