Good to know! Hopefully this information will help others down the line.

TL;DR 2006 325,330 requires more software steps than 2007+ 328, and stick to N52 based HW numbers

I just spoke with xHP, and for anyone who wants to complete a similar swap for 06 cars (330, 325) you'll definitely want an HP21 from an N52 powered car like the E60. Replacing the VIN in both DME and CAS with a vin that has an appropriate typecode for your car is necessary. At least with xHP it is. This is because this typecode (VD33) only supports HW 7563275, or HP19 (Gen 1).

In my particular situation, I'm swapping out the HP19 from an 06 330xi with an HP19TU/HP21 from an 07/10 (prod date is important) 335xi. xHP has informed me it would be easier to simply code the VIN from the new TCU to my DME and CAS. Yes, the 335 vin.

Quoted from xHP-
"the transmission tunes are pretty much the same for the inline 6 engines, could be that you have to adjust the shiftpoints a bit due to the lower torque of your 330i compared to an 335i which runs much smoother at low rpm. Shiftspeed, torque reduction etc.. should work without any issues even on a 330i."

This amount of work does not appear to be necessary for 2007+ 328s as demonstrated by OP.

I'll finally be ordering my motor here soon so I'll keep you guys updated with the swap as I'll be taking care of everything at once

And what was the reason to swap ZF6HP19 to ZF6HP21 for you?

A few reasons. An upgrade. More clutch packs, updated mechatronics, overall improvement. It can handle power better if I decide to boost it, or its already there if I ever swap it. That and my original one was done for. Kept slipping and going into limp mode (third gear) on the highway. Did a full refresh on it, while it did it less it still did it. Not to mention there's not many out there and with more miles they're still more expensive. Got this HP19TU with 66k on it for $400 shipped

Has anyone looked into the gear ratios between the two transmissions? 8 gears may not be better than 6 if the first gear is too tall. I'd think it's OK but I've never checked.

I haven't checked between the 8hp and 6hp, but from my research the 6hp21 has the same gear ratios across all models. The final drive is was changes.

8th gear on the 8HP is about the same ratio as 6th gear on the 6HP; 1st gear is a fair bit shorter on the 8HP.
8HP-equipped cars have a taller diff to compensate (iirc E90 to F30 was 3.73 to 3.3ish).
