Built N55: PS1, PS2 or stock turbo?
After dealing with a spun rod bearing, I purchased a new N55 long block with ARP hardware, VAC rod bearings and a forged M2 crank. Haven't pulled the old engine/turbo yet but figuring with 72k I should probably deal with the turbo while the engine is out. Anyways, trying to decide which turbo to go with.
Context Use: Around town cruiser. Probably no more track days after blowing up the first motor... Car: 2011 335i xdrive, 6MT, 72k miles. Lot of suspension/chassis work, full bolt on MHD 2+ and Wavetrac LSD (with 700 miles on it...). I've owned the car for 8 years and plan to keep it for a lot longer. Zero rust and in excellent shape. Turbo Options: Stay stock, go with PS1 or PS2 Considerations: Want to keep this reliable/headache free. Not going to deal with methanol injection, port injection or E85. Sticking with pump 93. Tuning: Have MHD and the custom tuning process seems like a pain. Had JB4 in the past and liked it. Thinking about going BEF and JB4 if I go with the PS1 or PS2. Power Goals: Don't really care or need more power. Something like 16psi on a PS2 for around 375-400whp would be plenty. Would appreciate a flatter power band without the significant drop off after 5k. I do like the idea that the PS1 can be run on the BMW stock tune in case of any annual inspection issues in the future. Please bear in mind that I've had my share of "project" cars and now time is limited. I'd also like the option of using a stock OE downpipe in the future if needed. Could really use some feedback from others who have been down this route. Again my goal is to have something that will be relatively maintenance free (aside from typical things like coils/plugs/waterpump/thermostat/etc.) for the next 40-60k miles (i.e. no turbo rebuilds every 10k miles). Questions: -How well does the PS1 and PS2 run on the stock BMW OE tune? -Is the BEF/JB4 combo still advisable? -What is the typical quality/longevity of the PS1 and PS2 on a conservative tune? -How would the PS2 run on the stock downpipe and stock tune? Feedback would be much appreciated. Heres the new engine... Last edited by carguy138; 08-25-2022 at 11:31 AM.. |

Well since nobody seems to give a crap what you do lol... I felt sorry for you so here's your answer
PS2 for sure, Fuel it stage 2 pump, VRSF down pipe, your favorite tune to around 20psi mine "Wedge". When you get bored of that add a AEM meth tank.... Then drive like white car on your left

I haven't driven a ps1 or ps2, and like the greater power potential of ps2. But for a daily driver, how does the ps2 feel? From what i've read (and seen in logs people have posted), I get the impression they aren't that responsive. I haven't purchased a ps2 yet, because i'm concerned that it may feel laggy around town, despite feeling great it the higher rpms. Any thoughts?

As someone also with a 2011 335i x drive looking at turbo options I would probably just go PS2 along with you're new motor. It will give a much better and usable powerband along with a whole refreshed turbo and housing. Also do a Stage 2 LPFP and get a custom flash tune. JB4 is a thing of the past, get a tune from twisted or another n55 reputable tuner.

Go Pure stage 2.
The huge benefit of pure stage 1 is that the install is much easier/more DIY friendly. Since your engine is already out, the price gap will be a lot smaller. You've got to go custom tune either way so the stage 2 provides better bang for buck. Stage 1 is a nice upgrade and gets them to where they should have been stock (about N55 EWG level) but stage 2 will give you a genuinely fast car with room to spare and sound incredible. |

I am on PS1 and feels great. Flat, linear powerband with much less drop off.
Conservative pump tune = 380-390whp Pursuing E tune, looking at 420-440whp PS2 and additional 40-60 hp on pump gas would have been nice, but not for the additional price.

If you go with PS1, like many here that have done it, you'll always wish you had gone with PS2 in the first place. At this point labor is a moot point. You've got the coin, as you did a built engine. Add power as you see fit in the future.

I agree. My car mostly sits in a garage and doesn't get tracked. I thought about the ps2 but the added lag turned me away. I won't typically be keeping my rpms where the ps2 shines. The PS1 has mostly no lag, my 598 torque peaks at 3,244.

Yep. Fabian at pureboost really got this thing moving. In my logs I've seen up to 23.7lbs boost and 17.5* timing. The PS1 can put it down with ethanol and a good tune. All wedge got out of it was 393/514.

Wow this post is getting really overthought.....is there lag? No more lag as if someone can up to run you and your lagging around 1500 rpms checking your phone when if you where ready you would be at 4k ready to pin it If your going to spend the money get the PS2 and just have it tuned to your liking. The minimal lag will be made up in the power soon to come..or get PS1 find me lagging around and I will demonstrate

Why deal with 1000 RPM later spool for a car that will never be able to properly stretch its legs?

Humm maybe save the money and skip the turbo altogether....maybe some cool wheels or a spoiler so it looks fast but isn't...since your not going to stretch its legs...
