I've had some issues with my 57 plate 330i / N53 engine. It's done 136,000 mi.



I noticed an issue to start with as I would accelerate and once the revs got above about 3,000 rpm it would sometimes trigger the engine warning. Sometimes when the engine starts cold the revs drop really low when it starts to tick over and the engine warning will kick in again. Sometimes when I drive it, the engine warning doesn't come on straight away but it'll be "lumpy" and after a longer period the warning light will come on again.

Sometimes I drive it, occasionally, it feels sweet as a nut!

It feels like the power is a little down the it's drinking fuel. It is using oil as I have to top it up occasionally. There is no oil on the drive.

A garage suggested it was oxygen sensors but didn't seem interested in working on it.

So, a friend of mine had a computer and this is how the oxygen sensors read when blipping the throttle.

There are some error codes:
2E84 BSD - electric coolant pump; missing
2B05 DME - Nitrogen-oxide sensor, heating
2B07 DME - Nitrogen-oxide sensor, electric
2B06 DME - Nitrogen-oxide sensor, lambda linear
2AFB DME - Nitrogen-oxide sensor, lambda binary

... and after a quick drive added:
29F2 DME: Fuel high-pressure system, fuel pressure
2E85 BSD - electric coolant pump, missing

These are all the codes after I'd cleared them all originally. These are the codes before the reset. Sit tight!

As you may have guessed, I'm no mechanic but looking for pointers and maybe an indication as to whether this is something that can be sorted - it feels bad to me but obviously I don't really know what I'm on with. The care is really nice and reasonably tidy for it's age and I'm prepared to spend a little but don't want to get carried away.

Took it for a examination at a specialist today (who were great btw):

Nox sensor,
Water pump
HP Fuel Pump

£2411 - inc labour and genuine parts.

Feels a lot to be spending on this age car. Anyone got any advice?

Water pump is about £350. NOX sensor the same. HP fuel pump is around £900, which leaves £800 in labour.

It's about right. Those are the parts I'd be replacing with those fault codes.
