BEF what should I expect?

Hey guys I am getting a MHD BEF soon, I currently have JB4 and will be flashing a BEF with MHD so what should I expect? what differences would I notice and what would be any common symptoms? Anything negative of running both instead of just JB4 or MHD alone?

What would you guys run?

I will run pump 93 since I will only put about 30% e85 sometimes in the tank..

Expect smoother power delivery. As far as 30% e85 is concerned, once you feel the difference you'll use it whenever available, not "sometimes."

How much power difference will 30% make? and with the pump 93 tune on mhd 30 is the most I can use right?

You know that old saying "What is the difference between ooh and ahhh?" Depends on what other hardware you are running. Catless...

Beyond smoother power delivery and the other couple flash time options you have, piece of mind and no speed limiter. The JB4 has very little control. Flashing the DME allows the car to operate as it should with real load reporting and with higher boost levels.

Get ready for the "Sell the JB4 and go MHD only posts."

So I will get higher boost with mhd bef? and how much would it be?

The JB4 lies to the car's DME to run higher boost. The car doesn't know it is actually running the boost you really are. Flashing the DME will let the DME operate as it should at those higher boost levels.

For the JB4 specifically flashing a BEF does increase boost targets because they lowered the ignition advance.

Map 1 is 16 psi and map 2 is 19 psi.

How many psi would be the max in jb4 alone without bef?

I don't think Terry ever scaled the 4 bar map sensor for the N55 so about 36psi.

The maximum boost that the JB4 for the N55 with or without a BEF would be limited by the sensors ability to read it. I answered your question exactly as you asked it. The 3.5 bar tmap sensor will read 50.7psi. Remove atmospheric pressure and you're left with 36ish psi.

To answer the question I think you intended to ask, MHD (BEF) isn't magic. You will be limited by your turbo, octane, and fuel system. The BEF lowers timing so you can run more boost but being that it isn't magic we aren't talking about much. The stock turbo can probably boost to 23-25psi for 500 rpm but is typically around 12psi at redline. I already mentioned what the new map 1 and map 2 targets were so if you're asking about how much more boost, that's how much.

You could lower timing more by modifying the BEF since they are unlocked. You could pay someone for a custom BEF. PTF (Pro Tuning Freaks) used to do custom flashes and would set timing super low and boost pretty high. I would love to see dynos showing that it makes more power. I think it was a marketing ploy. People like to say "I am running 20 psi on pump" so the tuners would make that happen.

Yeah bro I just didnt understand when you said 36 psi I thought you where joking or something and yeah I dont expect it to do much more either I actually thought the psi would stay the same for jb4 alone or with bef and yeah some fellow bmw owners told me if I need more boost custom tune is the way to go I would for sure check that out!

FYI, Turbod definitely knows what he's talking about. He's one of the few guys on E90post that I would actually take advice from or listen to. Just a heads up if you see his posts in other threads
