All of this is exciting except we need a tuner to step in and lead the way. I want to get the turbo upgrade but wont until I see Terry or Cobb support the upgrade.

Terry and Cobb do both support the upgrade. Terry is actually one of the pre-orders so he can start tuning it immediately and Cobb is 100% on board they are just finishing up their N55 software.

Upsets with compressors can cause the shaft to spin backwards, so if anything. one wants to have a bearing/shaft design that can tolerate reverse rotation, but compressor and turbine wheel design has nothing to do with it.

Maybe folks should wonder why the proven and very well experienced manufacturers are not doing this. Are they really stupid?

Don't forget you would likely have to upgrade the transmission in order to handle the kind of power....Not bad pricing for what you get.

I'm not sure about autos, but we manual drivers would likely just need a stronger clutch which is fine by me, I was going to replace the flywheel post-warranty anyway since the stock one is way too heavy.

I would assume that you would have upgrade something in the auto tranny...I just don't think they could handle the load....Maybe temporarily but def no permanently.

Auto trans is good to 450wtq reliably, 500wtq is pushing it and will likely shorten its life. This turbo would help with an auto tranny, just detune the mid range a bit and let it carry the torque all the way to redline with HP climbing the whole way.

The BMS guys are having slippage issues with their DCT 135i already at <400whp.

Sounds like a plan. Expect to pay more for a stage 1 upgrade. But hey different strokes, different folks.

This post still cracks me up. Professional engineer for 35 years and he comes into a thread and basically makes himself look like a total douche... If you have no knowledge of something, may I suggest a quick google search next time before going into attack mode...

Dinan isn't replacing the turbo... their upgrade is just a larger compressor... Can't compare them to Vargas... Steve from Dinan is marketing at 400whp where Vargas is shooting for a 500whp base gains... I am sure an aggressive upgrade would follow... Hence why Dinan is not in the same league... Yet

I've watched all those Dinan videos wherein Steve takes the viewer through the N55 upgrades and I am 99% sure that the "400" figure that he tossed out is going to be a crank number, not wheel. Think about it, even being extremely charitable with your driveline loss estimations, 400 whp is north of 450 crank. No way they are going to see that out of the factory turbo on just an upgraded compressor wheel. Keep in mind that the stock turbine will not be touched.

This upgrade from Dinan will be for a customer wanting something more than their stage 3 software. Dinan will dyno it around 350whp, claim 400 crank and the rest of the world will never be able to get it to put down over 330whp, just like all of the N54/5 stuff they make.

Enough talk, I want to see a f ing n55 already with a new turbo lol.... Show me some numbers and then take my money... I have been debating between the 2014 m3, 2013 m5 or just f it all and get the Vargas turbo upgrade. I think I am going with number 3 :-)

Where are we with this yet?

I put my car completely back to stock, and I must say that it drives nice again with the stock dp back on. its like the car reacts better when it knows exactly what the O2 readings are. So my question is... why can't I leave the stock DP in and upgrade with the bigger turbo. What makes this DP so much different than any high horsepower turbo car that still meets emission standards? I know it puts pressure on the turbo, but hey, if your only going to punch it every now and then, so what?

Look at the new M3 with more than one turbo... it needs to meet emission standards so you don't see them going catless as soon as a high output turbo comes into the mix.

You can leave the stock DP in but performance will suffer, turbos like zero back pressure the more flow you can get the better. A cat is not going to effect your pre cat O2 readings at all which is where the car gets most of its info for adjusting tune. With any turbo upgrade I suggest 100% changing the DP to allow more flow but if you really want a cat for emission purposes get an after market catted DP. The stock DP is most likely pretty restrictive. Also an update, we are nearing completion of the test unit. We had to stop and completely alter the machining process which meant our machine shop calling in a 3D CNC programmer and redesigning the program to get it exactly how we wanted it, and it also meant building all new tooling. But the tooling only needs to be built once. It's done now and machining is back on track. Looks like 2 weeks til we have our unit ready to go on a test car.
