All of this is exciting except we need a tuner to step in and lead the way. I want to get the turbo upgrade but wont until I see Terry or Cobb support the upgrade.

Terry and Cobb do both support the upgrade. Terry is actually one of the pre-orders so he can start tuning it immediately and Cobb is 100% on board they are just finishing up their N55 software.

Don't forget you would likely have to upgrade the transmission in order to handle the kind of power....Not bad pricing for what you get.

I'm not sure about autos, but we manual drivers would likely just need a stronger clutch which is fine by me, I was going to replace the flywheel post-warranty anyway since the stock one is way too heavy.

I would assume that you would have upgrade something in the auto tranny...I just don't think they could handle the load....Maybe temporarily but def no permanently.

Auto trans is good to 450wtq reliably, 500wtq is pushing it and will likely shorten its life. This turbo would help with an auto tranny, just detune the mid range a bit and let it carry the torque all the way to redline with HP climbing the whole way.

The BMS guys are having slippage issues with their DCT 135i already at <400whp.

I've watched all those Dinan videos wherein Steve takes the viewer through the N55 upgrades and I am 99% sure that the "400" figure that he tossed out is going to be a crank number, not wheel. Think about it, even being extremely charitable with your driveline loss estimations, 400 whp is north of 450 crank. No way they are going to see that out of the factory turbo on just an upgraded compressor wheel. Keep in mind that the stock turbine will not be touched.
This upgrade from Dinan will be for a customer wanting something more than their stage 3 software. Dinan will dyno it around 350whp, claim 400 crank and the rest of the world will never be able to get it to put down over 330whp, just like all of the N54/5 stuff they make. |

Enough talk, I want to see a f ing n55 already with a new turbo lol.... Show me some numbers and then take my money... I have been debating between the 2014 m3, 2013 m5 or just f it all and get the Vargas turbo upgrade. I think I am going with number 3 :-)

Where are we with this yet?
I put my car completely back to stock, and I must say that it drives nice again with the stock dp back on. its like the car reacts better when it knows exactly what the O2 readings are. So my question is... why can't I leave the stock DP in and upgrade with the bigger turbo. What makes this DP so much different than any high horsepower turbo car that still meets emission standards? I know it puts pressure on the turbo, but hey, if your only going to punch it every now and then, so what? Look at the new M3 with more than one turbo... it needs to meet emission standards so you don't see them going catless as soon as a high output turbo comes into the mix. |
