Engine Shudder

Hi Guys,

Ok, this is a bit of weird one to explain so stay with me on this. Over the last few weeks, I've noticed that the engine seems to shudder at around 30/40MPH. It's almost like a rocking back and forth when applying power.

This is not like the judder on the 320D's which comes after moving off, this is different.

I've been on a few forums and it seems like it might be a fuel/air mixture problem, either being to rich or lean which might be down to air filters or air sensor.

I'm just wondering if you guys think this is a fair assessment, or if I'm totally on the wrong tracks!

Thanks in advanced.

Pete

I have not had that in my 320d but I have had slight juddering when at idle, can feel it when your sitting at the lights or parked up. But the revs dont change just slight juddering from the car, feel it more on your back rest.

Sorry, Iknow this has nothing really to do with your problem but wondered if you have this problem also???

Oddly enough, this is the one judder I don't seem to have. I used to get the clutch judder when moving off, however this seems to have disappeared (strangely!) however this is the latest of the shakes/shudders/judders.

The car is going into the garage next week, so will see what they say... I'll keep up posted

I was going to start a new thread on this. I also get this when i start the car and it is cold. It shakes almost like it is really windy outside, the revs very slightly move up an down.

Thats what I am getting, but have not noticed my revs moving to be honest. I had BMW look at it a few months back and they couldnt find anything wrong with it, a smooth running test showed that the injectors were in spec etc etc. Mine has done it when it's hot aswell though

Weird...Pete, keep us posted mate, this may give me a step in the right direction with mine.

I get this, I thought it was when the engine is cold but it's actually at 900-1000rpm which the engine just happens to idle at when cold but later dropping to about 700-800.

But when warm if I hold the revs at 900 again I can feel the shudder.

Dealer couldn't find anything wrong (no fault codes, nothing like old-fashioned engineering!!) and TBH it's a very minor thing so I'm just going to monitor it.

Yes as with me to, I am wondering if it's just a 'thing' with this engine. I will monitor it and take it end at the end of the year with the complaint and keep at them as my warranty end in March 2010.

There's a fatal design flaw in all the 320i/d engines these days that results in bad running vibrations, rattles and other clattery problems.

The engines are missing 2 cylinders!! Apparently built with 6, penny pinching Gerry stole 2 of the buggers resulting in all sorts of shenanigans.

They call it 'progress' i think.....

yeah, i'm 25K however when this happens, my fuel economy seem to go to hell. Hence why I was thinking it was a fuel mixture problem?

Any rough idle or hesitation issues, take the car out and give it a right thrashing, if there's still a problem then get it looked at.

Yeah, I've done that and while doing it (now this might be my imagination) however i'm sure the exhaust makes a slightly different sound. Almost like a blowing as if it's on it way out however the is no sign of smoke and performance is not effected.

Oddly enough I had a very similar issue with another diesel car (Saab) however never got down to what it was, sold it for this one!

It's going in on Tuesday for a squeak in the back pillar (very annoying!!), software upgrade and this shuddering.

Yet still i love the car... weird!

Let us know how you get on with that bud, if it works I will get mine in for an upgrade. Mine was in before and they said everything was ok so I would say the next thing is a software upgrade.

Well, took the car into the garage and they said that the software update which was due back in april from BMW is still yet to come out. They said that this shudder could be due to the software.

They ran checks on the sensors and found no faults.

I'm tempted to get the car remapped anyway if BMW are going to drag there feet over releasing this software. I have more faith in Evolve that BMW at writing software now!!

I have the same problem and started a new thread about it (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=317857)

Here's what I described:

It doesn't happen every time, however I noticed that if I rev the car for a while, the judder disappears for 1-2 min. After that, the problem reappears (judder in 2nd/3rd at 1750-1900rpm). Also there is no juddering with full acceleration.

Car is 2 years, 14k miles.

Any update from you guys? Did you get it fixed?

Its worth mentioning that it happens at approximately the same rpm. This has to give some insight on the cause of the problem.
