Its going to be both a winter car and a daily driver for when I dont want to put miles on the 911, so I am also looking for a car that has good mpg. And light weight is the way to go here. I found a 2007 328xi for $13k, I just can get a newer mini 2011 ish for the same price as an older bmw. It will save me across the board on insurance, gas, and maintenance. I already have a 5 year old 911, I dont want to be dealing with two older car problems.
Should I go for a manual or auto? This will also be a car I drive when I am stuck in traffic.

I thought about that, but honestly, I don't move stuff often. In the last 6 months, not having enough space in the 911 has been an issue once.

I would go for a GTI with a warranty--07+. So far they seem fairly reliable, get great gas mileage, fwd works well in the winter and the turbo is tons of fun even stock. Also, it is something different from what you've owned in the past (E46 and E90), should keep things interesting.

I would not buy anything with a turbo for a dd, just buy a 2.5rs, bullet proof motor and awd, thats all you need

Getting a new set of winters and I'm wondering since they're already back there to get a LSD.

I just did. Crazy how little folks know about money management. Even my more intelligent friends just dont get it. I have friends that didnt put anything in to their retirement plans until they were in their 30s. 10% min when you start working and that min should go up 1% every year.
