Flywheel peep hole?

Hi all! New to the forum. I changed my oil pan gasket tonight. Quite the process, as I'm sure all of you are aware. However, while under the car, I noticed something.

There is a small 1-inch opening to look up directly at the teeth of the flywheel. Does anybody know whether this is supposed to have some type of cover or plug? This is the N52 with the manual transmission. The clutch grabs drastically different when it is humid outside vs. dry. Could this be due to moisture getting in through the opening?
