Where is everyone getting their parts from? OEM is more expensive than aftermarket, considering original lasted till 60k miles I can't imagine A.M would last less than that, thoughts?

Prices paid ?

Is dayco a good brand? is using non-oem part risky? I alway get parts from rockauto, who usually has excellent prices despite their hefty shipping prices.

Seems most are out of the idler pulley, I've ordered my parts today from oembimmerparts.com. Good prices all for $120 shipped.

They have INA Tensioner, Contitech belt, Genuine BMW torx bolt and they have INA Pulleys as well as two other brands, they said they will ship what they have in stock for the pulleys. All with one year warranty as others. I need to get this done so couldn't wait on AutohauzAZ To get the pulleys in as they are out and not sure how long it would be.

About to do mine in the next couple of days and wondering about the torque, first was mentioned 18ft lbs then a full 90 degrees, then 59ft lbs, wouldn't the 18+90 degrees equate to 59 ft lbs ?

According to BMW TIS: 18ft lbs + 90 degrees for the belt tensioner
BMW TIS and Bentley Manual: (Ina) Idler pulley that is attached to the alternator 59ft lbs.
Check the pictures I posted on previous page.

Got it thanks, so we are assuming the the idler pulley to be the same as that on the alternator since its not specified right? It's a fair assumption I think, thanks ! Will report back on how it all went and whether it resolves the whistle noise, which I am hoping on .

Yes, check the first picture on the first page of this thread that TwinT1addict has posted. You can see the INA idler pulley is attached on the bottom of the alternator. You can also see that on the Bentley Manual page that I have posted.
The torque specs are for N52 and N51 (non-turbo) engines.

I think I would rather do 30 ft lbs on the idler pulley then 59, 59 seems a little high, I know on the E46 the idler pulley is 30 ft lbs (well actually 33 but that is a lot closer to 30 then 59), I don't want to risk stripping the threads. (Aluminum Block = soft)

And remember 59 ft lbs is for the pulley going into the alternator not the block.

With all this uncertainly its better having it closer to the E46 number and better having it under then over torqued.

I actually was taking to Bentley about this they claim it doesn't show up anywhere and it is not uncommon for BMW's and they recommended using the bolt chart on the first page of the Bentley Service Manual, I sent them this.

Quote:
I checked TIS, the bolt for the belt tensioner is one time use only and should be replaced, 25nm + 90 degrees.

The idler pulley is impossible to find anywhere, some people claim to use the torque number for the alternator idler pulley, but this pulley goes into the alternator not the soft aluminum block and I think it is too high (59 ft lbs).

Under the belt tensioner torque TIS specify "deflection pulley to alternator" as 40nm (30 ft lbs) which is different then if you look in TIS under Alternator it specify it as 80nm or the 59 ft lbs you guys yourself have in the Bentley manual.

This plus the fact that I know the idler pulley on the E46 is 33 ft lbs made me torque it to 30 ft lbs to not risk stripping the hole in the block.

You can see my post with a screenshot of TIS post #50
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...+torque&page=3

And scrolling down some more someone else posted screenshots of the other screen in TIS showing 80nm.

So In my opinion I think "deflection pulley to alternator" is a poor german translation and actually means the torque for the idler pulley (40nm or 30 ft lbs) as looking under the BMW parts catalog the idler pulley is described as deflection pulley and the pulley for the alternator is described as something different.

TIS states it has to be 80 Nm for the idler pulley which is attached to the alternator housing.
Bentley manual says the same.
My old and new idler pulley are OEM BMW, made by Ina. Check the screenshot of TIS: Belt pulley (ribbed V-belt) with freewheel (Ina) fitted to Bosch and Valeo alternators: 80 Nm

Yea, its pretty straight forward if you have the right tools. Make sure you have at least 14in breaker bar to unload the tesioner...well its just alot easier.

Im glad i did mine cuz this is when i found out my oil filter housing is leaking....another diy project lol

So which is it ? If I tightened to 59lbs can I loosen it to 33lbs or is it too late?

Do you know how to do a conversion? 59 ft lbs = 80 NM this isn't what is being disputed.

If you look under the torque for the belt tensioner it shows deflection pulley to alternation as 40nm or 30 ft lbs, I'm claiming this is poor translation and actually means the torque for the idler pulley. (non alternator). Based on the evidence I posted above.

The torque for the alternator idler pulley is 59 ft lbs and this is not disputed.

Yes I know how to do a conversion (I'm familiar with the metric system).
It wasn't really clear which pulley you meant.
I thought you meant the idler pulley attached to the alternator, which is 59ft lbs.
This diy is talking about replacing that idler pulley on the alternator and the belt tensioner, so I didn't know you meant something else.

So this part is
Mechanical belt tensioner #11287530314
and Deflection pulley (Idler pulley) #11287535860?

It's a great price if it is but the manufacturer is INA. Is that the same manufacturer BMW uses?

Hey,

I was wondering did you get the your parts there when you this DIY?

Just want to confirm with you that this replaces the
Mechanical belt tensioner #11287530314
and Deflection pulley (Idler pulley) #11287535860?
