E90 Questions
Hi, I've recently purchased a 06 335xi from one of my buddies.. that gets wrecked and smashed up cars... He sent me a photo of it I fell in love in now about a month in and I've now replaced the front bumper front headlights and driver side front fender.. I was wondering where should I go from here. (things to look out for). Cars almost in mint condition now just needs a new paintjob and a good cleaning and it'll look mint. Info of car.. 6 speed manual, inline 6 3.0l n53 or n54 which ever was used pre face lift. Has 97K Klicks. I personally don't know where I should start with it.. Still needs safety and structural safety. car had 18's on before the person brought it to Tnt auto (place where smashed cars and stuff go to) I put on my 16's (my style 4 bmw rims) and I seen because its a awd I needed to find something about the specs of the tires or something.. Excuse my Noobness.. Looking for knowledge and advice.. Thanks for responds. Have a blessed day or night either or :P.

You might want to double check what car/engine you have. For where you are the 335(N54 engines) was only available on 2007+ models. 2006 year had the 325 or 330(both n52 engines)
Also being that 335s cannot fit 16"s over the brakes; Id assume you have a 325/330. |

HI, thank you for the answer. I'm almost certain they are 16's and they do fit no rubbing no nothing... AND it is a 335xi 06 like I said. I can post photos of it. Another thing is. Is there a easy way to tell what kinda engine it is. Its also pre facelift if that helps..

For North America: -2006-2011(2012 wagon & 2013 for coupe/conv) 325,328,330 had N52 engines(SULEV states had N51) -2007-2010 335 had N54 engines -2011+ 335 had N55 engines (excluding IS models) -2009-2010 335D had M57 diesel -2008-2013 M3 had S65 V8 and I mean the front caliper; The front rotor diameter pushes the caliper farther out so that 16" barrel will not fit over it. |

I think in Europe the same way you could get basically a 2005 e90 you could probably get a 335 so early it was labeled as a 2006. But either way that's an n54 if it's 335i. My usa e90 325 I'm pretty sure was either 03/05 or 05/05

The caliper isn't close to rubbing touching of any sorts.. I don't know what its called its like a thin metal shield looking thing. that's the only thing I'm worried about. (photo below). And thanks n52 is what I have.. I got lots more to ask about. Also... I've read getting new coilovers does a huge deal.. I live in canada snows a bit idk if ill ever really take it through the snow.. Any recommendations. or should I start with something different? But should I look more into the wheels and specs before trying to drive it and do work to it. Would using my old e39 rims hurt anything on my new car? What things to replace first read alot about thermostats.. Anything else?
Thank you so much for the help so far guys kinda new to the BMW scene.. Have a great one boys! |

First thing I'd do is have it scanned with a proper bmw scanner. If you don't have one the cheapest ways to go about it is get the bafx obd2 adapter for 20 bucks and bmw deep obd app for Android and you can see all the codes the dealer can. You can also do this getting standard tools from bimmergeeks website and their kdcan cable and use a laptop. That way you know if there are any issues you aren't seeing a light on the dash for. As for wheels with xdrive your main concern is to make sure the tire diameter is the same in the front and the rear as to not damage the transfer case. I'd start by doing a service and checking for any leaks and such as that's a common thing. I've got kw coilovers on my 328xi but they're not exactly cheap, shame that xdrive cars don't get sport suspension even with sport package.

If there's one thing I've learned is that the E91 market specially in the US is only going to keep going up. So unless the sedan is noticeably better I'd probably go with the wagon.

A car that looks good could be hiding lots of underlying issues.
Look for oil leaks in the engine bay, look for leaky fuel pump and pressure regulator under seat. The radiator may have leaks too so inspect the hoses and stuff. Inspect the rear struts as they may be shot as well as the belts. You should also do all the fluid maintenance for the tranny, engine oil, differential fluid, coolant etc. I would also go over anything that has been touched an inspect. These wrecked car people and kiddy BMW types don't know how to fix stuff properly in my opinion. The spark plugs may be in loose, bolts for window regulator may be loose, control arms may be bent and other things. Don't pay much. Last edited by mousefarmer; 11-12-2020 at 04:45 PM.. |

Hi Guys sorry took me awhile to respond work has been a shit show.. I got a buddy to go look for the vin number to find out exactly what the car is. Also I did most of the work on my car . Front struts, rad, rad lines just to list some of the things I did. I don't know if I have any photos of the work being done. only just photos of where the clips and wires go..
I have another question guys, When I took the car to my buddies house to take him for a spin.. The 4x4 light came on, Parking brake light, and warning indicator.. I thought these lights came on as a cluster.. So I thought problem. What I think it is - I think the alignment is off enough to where the car could see it as a problem or even cause damage.. I don't have my code reader anymore I let my buddy use it and he lost the wire for it.. So gonna buy new wire before panic sets in. To properly figure out what problem is and or code that is showing up. Based of memory, When I first purchased car the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. But as I replaced most of the damaged and pieces I couldn't salvage, The light's slowly went away light by light. Only one remaining was warning light. Id have to look deeper into what it could possibly be. Thanks for reading and helping me guys. Have a good one fellas! Last edited by Prystay; 11-29-2020 at 12:49 PM.. Reason: Hit post like a dummy |

I suppose they would as they are pretty high end parts but that's just a guess. I live in South Florida so the last thing these coilovers will see is snow. Mine have no corrosion or anything on them.

Hi William thanks for the answer i'll do more searching around.. I got a couple other questions though, Would you say getting a intake and downpipes is a waste considering its a N52. I know it still pull's but its N.A. (naturally asperated). I haven't really looked into tuning. Is COBB used commonly with BMW's or is something else. Any info helps.

Thanks William! Idunno alot about turbos. Thanks for helping expand my knowledge! Now for what your talking about. The stage 3 intake manifold, would that cause any harm or just increase how much damage I do to the car with each pull or is it not that harmful? So I understand the basic's of flashing ecu's and such. But you speak of free I don't know alot of things that are really "Free". And I also assume there is kits to swap over to turbo an such? If so would that be a better way. Then just doing what I originally planned.. I don't really know what I really wanna do to the car.. I always shoot for different and personality. In my E39 case I was thinking something crazy like supercharger.. but after further looking into it was a hassle. expensive. And I wasn't really looking forward to that. Is there anything like that to base off of I know some people on instagram that have such supercharged e46's. Never heard of e90 supercharged.. So I take it. It hasn't been done (doubt it), or its uncommon. Any thoughts on that.. Sorry just kinda blabbed about what was on my mind.
Any Info Is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks again boys! |
