So did anyone ever in history of e90 era attempted to open all mighty OEM BMW PE for 328/330? Or this shall and will remain as one of the unsolved mysteries of automotive history and much later in 30 years our ancestors will attempt to acquire the only survived PE from BMW museum for X-ray scan to finally see what was inside
P.S. Some say there is a real angry goblin sitting inside of PE and making all those sounds, others say there is nothing at all, dark void or possibly alien tech that was too advanced for us and that is why bmw changed PE design for F series |

I took the simple approach and went to a muffler shop and had a Magnaflow muffler installed with a resonator delete. It was too loud and sounded like an old MGB. Got a Magnaflow resonator installed and it is close to perfect, but does drone a bit in the higher gears. It has a nice rumble on start up. This set up was $760 and would have been cheaper if I left the original resonator in and/or bought the muffler and new resonator all at the same time.
Pics of the install are on the last 4 pics of the 10 posted here: http://forum.e90fanatics.com/showthr...1095889&page=2

buy your Muffler and resonator ahead of time (summit) and have the shop of your choice do their magic. Glad you're happy with it though! |

That's true, but as NY has fairly strict emissions inspections, I chose a shop that also does those inspections and made sure the equipment I got would not be a problem passing emissions. A lot of the E46ers like Magniflow, but I don't think it is as popular with E90ers.

So I went for it... i am in Canada with a 2011 323i, 2.5L auto and it needs all the help it can get. I have the secondary cat delete and the BPC tune ordered, waiting for the handheld in the mail now. I have been looking at headers and also just missed out on a used meisterschaft muffler for $500 so I had to give this a try before buying new.
I only cut out the one side and it turned out very quiet, slight low tone and no rasp in neutral. I know it's not the best setup just dumping into one chamber and finding its way out to the tips but the stock setup was already doing that, twice, so I figured this is not great but maybe a bit better. I did notice just before welding that the exhaust pipe for the inside tip is smaller then the outside tip. Inside tip pipe was closer to 1.5"ID and outside tip pipe is around 1.7"ID. I did check out the Borla muffler first but it's still expensive by the time it gets to Canada. This sounds perfect for an auto in neutral, if it's OK on the road I will probably leave it until spring. It's been snowing the last few days, once the roads dry up I can get another video if anyone is interested. Thanks to howardx and avocet for your pictures so I could give this a try. I couldn't find anyone that has done the muffler mod this way to know how it would sound so i am posting for anyone else that has thought of doing it, please don't rip on me to hard for it. It looks like the NA version doesn't have perforated piping and uses glass packing instead? You can see a bit of glass packing sticking into the piping. Last edited by The Nightman; 02-28-2017 at 10:44 AM.. |

I'm probably going to cut open my EU N53 325i muffler from an scraped car this weekend, will try to imitate the PE that's from my understanding is like a perforated straight pipe:
The EU N52 PE looks like this: So I'm a bit confused on how to do it.. I will however try to do it like this: I'm not an expert in anyway on mufflers and exhaust systems so if you think my plan sucks, please tell me . |

Thanks for your answer, I got the same feeling but I don't think I will go to a professional at the moment, think I will try to be cheap for once hehe. Will cut it open this weekend if my friend got time and then I'll see.

Im very interested in this mod and I'm a little confused about your outcome. Is this a video of the muffler mod with stock headers or with aa headers? Also would u say the modification sounds good with no drone? I'm new to all this stuff so apologies if i didn't use those terms correctly. Cheers! -Grant |

But seeing the PE Cutout renews my interest! My plan was to do this: "By leaving in the pipe marked yellow, the exhaust path will go through the baffles only once directly from entering the muffler, then straight out the exhaust." And it seems to do what he PE nearly does! Maybe pull out the old man hair? We will see. Hope to get her done by fall. |

I think you could make it even easier on yourself.
I would only cut open the left 'box' and make the 4 cuts you show to eliminate the 2 90* bends going to the tips. No need to open the center or the right side 'box'. You might have to put a tack weld on the 2 cut 90* where they exit the divider to keep them from rattling. Smaller square opening to cut into the muffler, 4 sawzall cuts, 2 tack welds, weld the square back on, done. |
