Any advice for a key that suddenly stops working?

BMW E90 330d 2006, has comfort access.

Key was working fine, no warning on the dash to say battery was low, locked the car and when I came back to it the car wouldn’t unlock, used the physical key but the alarm kept going off, none of the buttons on the fob would work and couldn’t start the car. Got the spare key and the spare key worked fine. Thought it may be the battery in the other key so put a new battery in and it still doesn’t work. As I said, spare key functions fine so to me something other than the battery has failed in the other key? I didn’t think it would be to do with the car? Any advice is appreciated, thank you!
