E90 Bi-xenon headlights - Full beam not working
Have a problem with my e90 335d.
Dipped beam works fine, and when full beam is put on the full beam symbol shows on the dash, however the xenon shutter doesn't raise, and the main beam bulbs don't light (same issue on both sides). After checking it out, there is no power going through the main beam wires (cant remember of hand - think its into pin 5 for xenon shutter and pin6 for full bea,). The headlights are fine - as tested connecting a 12v supply directly to the pins. So obviously its losing its power before it reaches the headlight. Anybody have any idea what it could be? Module of some sort?? |

Pin 5 in the headlights goes to pin 41 on the footwell module. Try connecting a wire to this pin and seeing if the shutters work. If they do then there could be a break in the original wire.

If it doesn't work is it likely to need the footwell module replaced? |

See this post: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...2&postcount=10 Before condemning the footwell module I would try and recode it. Also check all the earth connections coming from the headlight. |

Did your car come with xenons or were they retrofitted?

check the last 7 digits on vin decoder. If it was OEM, then there will be xenons.
If it was fitted later, you will not find xenons there. Lastly, if its pre-LCI xenon, then they use H7 as high beam and are not bi-xenon AFAIK. If that is the case, it is worth of checking the fuse for high beam (if xenons are factory fitted).

It is pre-lci - When i connect the power directly I can see and hear the xenon shutter operating. So on main beam, H7 and a full view xenon should be on. Can you get a 335d m sport with xenon headlights? Im yet to see one. Where is the fuse for high beam? I had a fusing layout diagram for the box behind glovebox, but couldnt see any mention of a fuse for high beam? And thanks for your help. Last edited by gerdy; 06-20-2014 at 09:52 AM.. |

Gerdy is right.
Pre lci e90/1 xenons do have a xenon shutter and separate h7 high beam. You can get any model with xenons Gerdy, just a tick box option, they were a pricey option circa £1000+ IIRC. Good luck with repair.. |

After checking out im assuming my xenons have been retrofitted as theres is no self leveling sensors, and the light switch has the height adjustment on it.
Bishbosh, i checked all fuses in that panel and all were ok, but there didnt seem to be one for the headlights. Any need to upgrade footwell module when retofitting xenons or any coding etc? Headlight full beam might never have work since fitting. |

Yes the module should be coded. Did you look at the full thread on my link above?
Generally you ought to swap the footwell module for one that supports xenons, however I did manage to get my lights working and coded on my old module, I swapped it anyway for completeness sake. It does sound like a retrofit that hasn't been done properly. Question: do your inner halogen lamps light when pulling on the stalk for flash-to-pass? |

going back to my earlier reply, this is what I stated. If 522 is not in your car description on bmw vin decoder, then you have retrofitted xenons. Good luck with sorting it out.

No the inner halogens (Or the xenon shutter - sliced into the same wire) doesn't work on full beam, or when pull the stalk towards you (flashing). Can coding be done remotely using team view or something? |

To sort that you splice into the wire for the main beam (Pin 6), and run it to the pin operating the bi-xenon shutter (Pin 5) - (Pin 5 and 6 both into the wire for full beam- otherwise there must be an issue with the shutter itself.

Oem method: When I pull the stalk, H7 bulbs turn on and not the bi xenon shutter. However when I push the stalk toward the front of the car, it turns on H7 and shutter is released so xenon is reaching further ahead. Clever engineering. On LCI xenons, they have bi-xenon and no H7s. So either way the shutter is released.

I did my xenon retrofit with levelling sensors and coded it myself with a few pointers from makkan.
They now work in the same way as factory xenons. When I pull the stalk the inner H7 halogen lights up (for flash to pass). When I push the stalk with the lights on the shutter flips up for main beam. Gerdy, you might want to check that your footwell module has been coded properly. |
