Hello everyone, I am at a loss here. I have a 2011 328i and have a very strange, loud grinding/howling noise. It only happens with the AC off and when I turn the AC on, it goes away. It has a new compressor in it since the swash plate went out on the old one. The noise started about a month after the compressor, but the AC blows ice and cools quickly after sitting. Everything under the car is tight and doesn't rattle (had it in the air with someone revving and the noise was present). The noise is prominent inside the car, but cannot here it coming from anywhere specific. I held the recirculation door thinking it was that rattling around, but that didn't change anything either. I changed the idler pulley and tensioner and that didn't make a difference. Stethoscope doesn't reveal anything (PS pump, alternator, compressor, block, head) that sounds abnormal. A side note, and not sure if it's related, but my mpg went from about 22-23mpg around town to around 18-19mpg. Please help!

Might be the clutch/bearings on the AC compressor? To isolate the drive accessories try this... remove the serpentine belt and fire up the car. If the noise is still present it's internal (engine). You should know immediately so don't run the engine for to long without the belt. You'll probably get some charging warnings etc FYI.
With the belt off spin each component and listen/feel for any abnormalities. A slight click or squeak @ 7-800 RPM will produce some gnarly sounds. Hopefully this helps.

Did you have a shop do the AC?
I'd just take it back and say it makes this noise and the AC setting affects it. They probably won't fix it if its unrelated, but they might as least look over it. Could be a faulty compressor from manufacturing defect.

One of the techs at work did the compressor. I actually think I located the noise today. I found that the high side line after it comes out of the heat shield in the side and curves by the firewall was disconnected from two clamps. I connected it and the noise is about 80% better. The line is resting on the chassis still, but now it's more secure. I got a noise kit from parts, but I think the foam might be a fire hazard from being near the manifold, so I'm going to figure out something I can use to cushion the line from the chassis and see if that makes it go completely away.
