THE LAST SMOG POST - SoCal Jan. 2021

For all you FBO guys asking about smog, here is the final post you will need. I just passed in December at a STAR Certified Station. I'm FBO stock turbo, no in/outlets, tuned on MHD. Still have my secondary cats and mufflers.

This should be everything you need to pass at any smog station in CA regardless of how strict they are.

1. Buy DPFix. Search ebay or buy a used one. If you're in Santa Monica you can rent mine.

2. Swap intakes and cp back to stock, make sure the engine bay looks as stock as possible. No need to remove downpipes even if they're catless.

3. Install dpfix, couple DIY's on here.

4. Flash map 0, no need for a complete reflash, just go to the stock map.

5. Go for a complete drive cycle to reset your readiness monitors. EVAP does NOT have to be complete. and n54s do NOT have a secondary cat monitor

6. If the primary CAT monitor doesn't reset, adjust the DP Fix until it does.

7. Bring the car into smog. To make sure they don't do a sniffer test (almost none do now) call the shop before and ask if the car needs to be warm. If they say no, go ahead and take it to that shop.

8. At smog all they did was pop the hood really quick, and scanned through the OBD. Out of there in 5 min and flashed back to stage 2 in their parking lot.
I had my tablet with the obd cable for MHD in the passenger seat while they were scanning, definitely a little suspicious lmao

That's it, throw in intakes and cp, and you're good to go. You don't have to mess with downpipes as long as you have the dpfix.

my engine bay does not look stock at all, relocated inlets, meth going into CP, among other stuff. I do have a DP fix that i have never used, last time with my old smog guy i just put the jb4 in map 0, i have no idea how they did it but they passed or faked passed.

Old smog guy moved so now stuck looking for a new one, im not really worried, i never drive the car, ill just register it as non-op till i find a new smog guy

DP fix should work for single turbo also right? Only issue we would have is the visual.

I guess you do not have "self serve" stations where you only plug into the OBD port for the check?

I could never get my DP fix to work, so I just swap everything back except the intercooler before smog, and flash to the stock map. Kind of sucks, but at least I know it'll pass. Nothing wrong that I know of for the DP fix, maybe its just my car, but I have one sitting around if somebody wants to buy it.

most have a little dial that you have to play around with for it to register right. I started with where it was set when it shipped, then had to turn it up a little for the CEL to go away.

So with this new software check they are doing, will MHD map 0 pass smog?

Now this is something I have yet to test. From the articles, I have a suspicion that they may be looking for anything in the software that isn't exactly from BMW. That being said I will be removing mhd completely when smog comes up next. Little annoying to do the long install after but worth the peace of mind. If you get flagged once for smog, you'll get on their targeted list and have to smog more often.

I did mine yesterday and all was well on stock tune. There was an article on this a while back That had some details. But i was good on stock mhd tune. I flashed back to stock removed mhd, not stage 0.

Just ordered the DP Fix and I'm due for smog by early Sept. Sweating bullets over here. I haven't installed MHD yet, just running JB4 which I'll switch to Map 0 prior to.

I'm in Ktown, did you have a smog shop that you recommend? I'm full FBO, plan on putting the stock airbox back on and hope for the best.

FBO here, So I followed this post, and flashed mhd stock, installed my dp fix as well as stock intake and chargepipe. Guy pulled the flashlight out and failed me for no front cats as well as flagging my car in the system as “tampered”. Just gonna say be careful where you go because seems like every smog shop knows to check for cats on the downpipes!! Not sure what my plan is now, but if you’re in San Diego and would let me borrow your stock downpipes that would be amazing lol

Would recommend going to a place that is super busy and more than a 1 man shop, I’m assuming these ones care more about quickness, the one I went to I was the only person and he spent 45 minutes doing the visual.

No recommendations for LA shops. I went to a little mom and pop place my family has been going to for years. Good luck, definitely recommend putting the stock airbox on just to remove suspicion. BMS sells carb stickers for their intakes for like $5 to make it look a little more legit.
