E92 rear console door rattles (mini-DIY)

The E92 rear center console has a storage compartment with a roll-back cover that, at least in my case, rattles like crazy. Here's my solution to the problem:

1) remove entire compartment assembly. If you open the door and give a good yank on the front of the compartment it'll pop right out.

2) remove the black storage compartment from the beige (or grey) trim piece by removing the four T-20 screws.

3) slide the cover forward off the storage compartment

4) apply felt tape around the top of the compartment (the bottom edge of the channel that the cover runs in) and rim excess with a razor or x-acto knife

5) installation is reverse of removal

I first tried covering the entire inside of the track with tape, but there wasn't enough room to put the cover back on. Covering just one side is plenty snug and leaves the door fully functional; just make sure you get it snugged all the way back into the corner. I used the back of a razor blade to help seat the tape.

I can't be the only one who has this problem; are there any other solutions floating around?

Mine rattles too.

Did you consider leaving the cover off, and does this solve it? I never store anything back there and it wouldn't look bad with cover removed.

Can I take the cover off w/o removing the compartment?

Yes, but I wasn't happy with the exposed black compartment on beige interior. If I had a black console I'd probably have gone that route.

No, but it's really easy to remove the compartment. The assembly just pops out, then it's only four screws.

Thanks for this post. I had the same problem. Everytime I revved the engine, I'd hear a rattling noise. Narrowed it down to the roll over cover on this rear console compartment.

I took it apart, unscrewed the 4 screws and applied a cushion around the whole covering.

No more rattle!

Hey Tdotcspot, can you describe the cushion that you used and where you placed it? Is it like felted cloth around the compartment where the door slides when closed? Do you have a picture by any chance?

Thanks!

Oh hey, people are still reading this

Update: I've peeled the tape out of the actual track slots themselves. It took about six months after the initial installation before the tape started getting balled up and jammed the lid.

That said, it turns out having tape just on the forward edge of the compartment (underneath the handle when the lid is closed) is perfectly effective. Good thing, too -- getting tape into the tracks was kind of a bitch anyway.

I'm not sure how well black tape on black plastic will show up, but I'll try to remember to snap a pic one of these days.
