My missus has standard seats in her 1 series - I much prefer the sports seats with electric side bolster. Stops you sliding around... :-)

If you mean what I think you mean, there is a setting that allows you to open just the drivers door on ignition off or all doors. It's on the OBC stalk menu.

Luggage pack is a complete waste of bloody money. The boot is so damn small that nothing rolls about anyway! I have never used them in the 12k miles I have done.

I dont have a climate windscreen and have never wished I had it even through the very harsh winter.

Sports Seats I would class as essential, plus I love the way they expand and contract! I am not a fast driver but can be enthusiastic, so find the extra support very useful! Plus they are very comfy.

Well I was looking to get 5 series or a Merc c-class for my next car. It's a company based scheme so I pay co2 tax, but I can spend as much as I like out of a benefits package.

Tripped across this discussion of the ED and am tempted as it would save me £200 to £260 per month. But the only thing I am concerned about is (although never having one) I fancied an auto to make the stop start journey easier.

So now I have to decide if I want a auto that much. I had decided against the 5er as it wasn't sporty enough so I need to decide if this will be sporty enough for me.

I currently have a 118d so I guess it will be better compared to that.

Hi there (my understanding is...) Unfortunately the ED is not available with Auto. My presumption is that it would take it above the magical 110 emmissions. Similarly you can't get it in Tourer or coupe body and it only comes with the 16" non run flat tyres.

Might be a few other restrictions / emmissions improvements as well.

Read through the thread and you'll find out more.

the above is correct. To give you an idea of the impact of auto, our ED is averaging 55mph so far without any attempt towards economy in mixed driving over 5,000 miles.

A friend has a 118d Auto and it is averaging 42mpg.

I think it depends.

We have a pre ED 118d manual and that returns around 44mpg average, our 320d auto touring would see around 48mpg.
I have a manual 18d X1 and that sees around 44mpg average, however the auto 20d sees about the same.

The ED 320d has a much longer final drive, this makes a hug difference for anyone who sits at 70-80mph a lot.
the 118d at 80mph is doing about 48mpg, the ED 320d is doing around 60mpg, and that can make your average jump a lot.

I think it has come to the point where manual vs auto is less important than all the other stuff.

As far as i'm aware you'd have to look at a golf for auto under 110g/km.

Or a citroen c4 e-hdi.

I'm sure there are others but they'll get smaller (physically) as you run through the list.

If you need something big then it's the golf estate all day, no auto though. Or the new focus.

This BM is the sportiest car under 110g/km, full stop. They have 163bhp and a 2 litre whilst everyone else is still arsing around with about 110bhp, and a 1.6L!! Infact vauxhall have resorted to a 1.3L, see astra. BMs achievement is breathtaking.

I see that there is now a 5 series ED model. that interestingly keeps the bhp at 184. Obviously, with it's size and extra weight over our 320 version, is a little slower, and less economical, but nevertheless, still manages 13% BIK. Amazing really, and still no sign of real competition from other manufacturers unless you go down in power to get the economy and CO2 emissions.

I wonder if they'll bring out an ED version of the 3 series touring...

I read in another mag' a few months back, the touring wouldn't be coming to the UK. I imagine it is the usual, not bothering with a RHD version. The reason we don't get some other models, even though a 'conversion' isn't the issue.

Well we have had our "ED" for 6 months now.

My wife and I have stuck about 6 or 7k on it.

Our driving is mixed, town, A/B road and motorway.

Neither my wife or I make much (if any) effort towards economy, and neither of us hang about.

The car is averaging just over 55mpg.

This compares to 48mpg for the LCI 320d M Sport I put 30,000 miles on doing the same driving.

So about a 10% improvement over a "normal" 320d. Impressive.

Mine's ready-ish. Could have next week but have had to delay as I'm on my honeymoon until the 16th. D'oh!

Still, it'll be worth the wait after having to suffer an Astra and 33mpg for the past three months - until yesterday when they swapped it for a Leon which is a far better car, but won't get the chance to use it.

Almost went for an M Sport, as a lot of others at work have, but the ED seemed a no brainer when you consider all the facts.

You wont regret it - i love mine and had the chance to drive from the Midlands down to Dover, Dunkerque, Antwerp and Rotterdam. Dispite some dodgy traffic in places, got 900 miles out the tank. Its not just a car for mpg, but a pleasure to driver - and the gadgets are great
