335i, oil service due and no sport mode in step?

hi all
ive posted this at bimmerfest also..
2007 E93 335i..i do have alpina tune coded in for a few years now.
my son had the car for a few weeks , no mischief likely.
oil service has gone overdue (by date) and no "S" or "M" mode available.
hoping its just a 'limp mode' protective thing until oil change is updated.
i can go up and down gears with paddles and shifter
but must physically hold them in place or else it quickly reverts to D.
no other warnings or cels except the oil change due in red.
thoughts?
thanks, john

check the wiring at the shifter.

it's common for them to break going to the microswitch that tells the car you moved the shifter to sport.

I had to repair mine when I bought the car.

As nsjames says, it's quite a common issue for the wire or wires to break. I just did mine, heres a pic.

probably the cost of the whole shifter on the good side(plus diagnosis).... or a new tranny on the bad.

This! Happened to me at 75K miles.....took indy mechanic less than an hour to repair and add strain relief.

just stick the wires back together and then pop them out of the clip that holds them so there's more slack.
