Another n54 6AT Cooler build
Previous title: Automatic transmission cooler fitting type
So does anyone here know the type of fitting that the automatic transmission cooler uses? I would like to relocate and use an external transmission cooler. It looks like a push fitting and I found this which looks pretty darn close. Russell Fuel Rail Fitting Adapters 640930 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/rus-640930 Here's some more info on another transmission cooler for our cars. http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38967 There's also some guy who machines these fittings. But I can't find the link and the prices was pretty hefty. $80. Edits for Aug 25 New title: Another 6AT Cooler build Ordered a custom machined transmission cooler fittings with 8AN ends from Jason (aubeast86). Google aubeast86, he's on the other forums. Thanks to LQQKOUT for the referral. Here's the items that I ordered for this project: Summit racing
Improved racing
I still need to find a way to plug off the two coolant lines. Aubeast86 used rubber plugs that fit inside the hoses perfectly. But I can't find anything that fits inside, not locally at least. I can only find caps, that go over with an ID of 5/8 when I need an OD of 5/8. So I found this. Good thing about summit is their fast shipping to NY. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/f...4139/overview/ Last edited by peterparker; 08-26-2016 at 02:14 PM.. |

I am still waiting on the parts from JEGS. Just planning to replace the heat exchanger that's in there with a trans cooler. I will try to take pictures during the install. It will be installed behind the driver side kidney grill in front of the radiator.

Question!
When I removed my factory transmission cooler, I found this random black O-ring gasket. There's already a green O-ring gasket in the OEM female fitting. And then there's also a black O-ring gasket that just fell out. I have no idea where it goes because it's too big to seat anywhere. I tried to seat it at the bottom, but it's just too big and flops around sideways. There's no other grooves in the fitting besides the groove for the green o-ring. So I'm a little stumped. Can I go on without it? |

There should be a groove inside the black fitting where it seats. It will seem too big until it's seated. From the first picture it looks like it was partially seated behind the green o-ring.

So everything is installed, been testing everything out for the past few weeks. Tweaked/redid some fitting and hoses and everything works great now.
As for the black O-ring, It sits directly behind the green o-ring. So you have to push the green o-ring forward to make room for the black o-ring. When I did a few test runs & the cooler was really really hot. But after shooting it with a temp gun, it showed 165f, so apparently it's working. I'm going to throw on my bumper on this weekend and I may have to ditch that foglight. I'll keep you guys posted. |

Crap, I didn't realize that there's no photos.
There was an open hole where you can mount something, this is right above the front air duct location. (Far inner bolt to the left) Then I mounted another bracket on the bottom left side of the cooler to the fender liner. (Not photoed) |

Had to relocate my cooler from grill to fog light.
"Here's mine mounted. Lines run directly to the stock quick disconnects..."
I mounted mine in the front grill at first and it looked very good... but failed the temperature test. Temps were 220ºF even driving fast on freeway. So followed Jason's set up and advice and relocated it to the left fog light area. Now highest temps are 181ºF when moving, and 200ºF if stuck stand still in traffic. I am going to install a fan with thermostat to help with standstill traffic ventilation. I will update and start a thread to show the results. Pros: temps drastically lower than grill mount. Cons: you have no fog lights and a permanent fog light fault code. I ordered the vent grills for the right inner fender lining and dremel cut it to fit the left side. See pics. VT |
