ZF 6 speed auto gearbox service advice
My car is on 90k miles (330d auto 2006), it’s never had a gearbox service and I notice sometimes when it’s cold it will Rev a lot higher than usual, suddenly change gear and that will be jerky and in general some of the gear changes are jerky so I want to get it serviced. I’m sure I read ZF recommend it around 60/70k miles.
I’ve had a few quotes which are around the £250-£300 mark for a gearbox service. Does that sound right? I also talked to a gearbox specialist near me and he was actually saying the service would be pointless if you didn’t change the “linkage” or mecha tronic seal, as well, something like that. So he recommends doing that. Which he’s quoted £550. Does this price sound reasonable? And would you agree with what he has said? Thanks |

I did mine myself, very easy job (inc mech seals) and yes the gear changes were noticeably smoother after (changed at 86k).
I`d say max 2 hour job for a pro (more like 1 1/2) - Parts are expensive unless you get lucky like I did. You need a new pan(if that`s the right word for it) as the filters are integrated, bolts, oil and mech seals - From memory that's like 300+ from BMW direct. (I`ve assumed you gear box is the same as mine) |

I thought it's around £550 for the full proper job with OEM/ZF parts, thats for the south east so might be cheaper elsewhere.

paid £400 for my e92 335d bx service and £475 for my 640d,,zf kit should be around £200 with oil and mech sleeve and seals,,,bmw indy who did mine sourced the zf kit,and in my invoice it totals £210,seen loads buy from e bay or auto doc(facebook forums ),,but why would you when whoever is doing it can source it,that way if any of the parts are bad etc you are covered,,garages do not warranty customers parts etc,,where are yo based ?

You do need to make sure the car is level though and you need to be able to check the temp of the thing as the final fill is when the gearbox oil is at 40/50c (inpa can tell you or use a IR thermometer). I used this vid which nailed it IMO. Plus I like Aussies. Didn`t bother with the adaption reset though, seemed unnecessary (after researching effectiveness) and overly complex. Oh and fyi - Gear box oil smells like cat piss. I did mine 6 months ago and the smell still hits me every time I think about it...... You get covered in the shit when removing the mechatronics unit.... Last edited by Chapperss; 06-13-2021 at 02:39 PM.. Reason: cat piss |

ZF recommend every 50-70k miles depending on driving style. I used Perfect Touch here in the south east for mine. You could try AReeve in Norfolk if you don’t want to do it yourself.

Mine is going in for a gearbox service on Friday, at WMB in bury at Edmunds so that could be close to you. They quoted £450ish

I had the same symptoms at 130k. Had mine changed by BM Wizard in Oswestry for about £450 - they changed the oil, sump/filter and all the seals/sleeves plus reset adaptations and it's sorted.
