Dying car at operating Temp

Hey everyone, i am having issues with my n54 when it gets up to operating oil temp on the gauge. I will be driving along and the car just randomly dies, rpm gauge goes right down to 0, the car will fire itself back up while coasting and do it all over again. It only does this when it is at good oil temp. I stop on the side of highway and let it cool off, fires right up and runs fine until the oil temp gets to about 100 Celsius.

These are the only codes I have. Any ideas??

Are you getting the yellow or red coolant lights? What's coolant temp look like when this happens?

Not getting any idiot lights coming up, I didn't have my monitor on me at the time, so couldn't tell ya. Was just judging it based off oil temp.

Hmm, check your valve cover gasket. I'm curious if when the car is warm, oil is leaking into the thermostat area/connector.

Other than that, based on what you've given I could only assume an issue with the thermostat or a BSD fault of some kind.

Okay, I just changed the valve cover gasket about 200 clicks ago.

I have a new thermostat sitting in the box that I was considering putting in. Would a shitty thermostat cause that issue?

Haha I tried to be quick enough to add these to my last post before you responded.

Seems the code is usually solved with a thermostat replacement. Not sure why the car was shutting off though.

Ah ok. I see, I appreciate the help! I'll throw that thermostat in and see what happens.

Little googling indicated the thermo is tied to the alternator due to the BSD so could definitely be the cause.

No worries, I genuinely check E90Post quite a few times a day. I hope I helped out and I hope this solves it for you!

My understanding is that the water pump is tied to the alternator through BSD (along with the oil condition sensor and IBS), but not the thermostat. Obviously there is a fault with the thermostat, but I'm not at all convinced it's the cause of his car randomly dying.

Okay, any ideas as to why it would do that?

I'm not saying not to replace the thermostat. It just doesn't make sense that a stuck-open thermostat would cause the engine to shut off, and do so without any dash messages. When my water pump went out, I got the yellow temperature warning followed by the red one a few seconds later, but I still had to shut the engine off myself. It just seems like there's something else going on. Unfortunately, I don't have any good ideas. I would take the car out again while monitoring coolant temperature and see where it's at when the car shuts off.

Ya I will definitely change out the thermostat as I wouldn't doubt it's faulty.

I know my Oil filter housing gasket was leaking onto my alternator before I changed the gasket out, maybe it messed up my alternator or something?
