Just to add on the DPF removal and soot...
I'm a US based 335D owner and I had my DPF removed and ECU tuned this past fall. With normal driving, I see no smoke at all. Although, there is definitely a more rich exhaust smell when at idle, or first pulling out of the garage. I only see a cloud of black smoke in the rear view mirror when I floor the pedal hard. There's also a bit more sound to the exhaust, but it's more of an increased resonance...and by no means obnoxious. |

Unfortunately no. My only frame of reference is comparing to my previous Evolve tune and obviously stock. I've been very satisfied and have no regrets with the DPF removal. I'm further curious about the DEF delete, but not sure if the delete would serve much benefit..

My state has an initial vehicle inspection and then an annual emissions check, but diesels are exempt from the recurring emissions checks. I guess the rules could change down the line, but I'll cross that bridge later. Plus, I'm outside of my warranty period.

I had my DPF work and tune done by jrautoelectronics. They're just outside of Toronto. They remove the DPF, hollow it out, install a bypass pipe within, re-weld it shut and then re-install the DPF housing. Much easier to keep all the original sensors and bung holes than it would be to create a new custom down pipe.

Oldsankey, I know of JR Auto and live 30 minutes from them. Where in the US do you live. Did you specifically drive here to get this work done?

I drove up from DC/MD area...but was already up in Buffalo visiting family, so a pretty quick trip to Oakville from there. I ended up just dropping the car off for a few days.

I finally got my car dynoed after removal of the DPF:
First a chart BEFORE removal of DPF: Then a chart AFTER removal of the DPF: Bare in mind this is a 330d with a single turbo that delivers 231Hp/500Nm ab factory I can definately say theres a difference........

Allan, thank you for sharing your info. Very nice results! Did your dyno operator or your tuner make any comments about EGT reductions with this change? Any idea of how of this improvement comes from the removal of the DPF, and how much is from the tune?

Hi DD
My dyno guy is not the same as the guy tuning for me. Sepereate guys to exclude conflict of interest ;-) My tune guy have not mentioned anything about the EGT, but I can ask him. We might do a retune again later this week to find even more power. As I understand it, you cannot remove the DPF without, at the same time retune. One of the main reasons for this is the change of backpressure. When the DPF is removed, theres no constraints left in the exhaust. And without the constraints the backpressure is much lower, and without the DPF in the way, the air can get out of the turbo much faster which makes it possible to change some of the values in the tune to raise the effect. One more little trick my tuner fiddled with is the angle of which the injectors delivers the fuel. that trick is part of the extra 40Hp and 70Nm. How much each part of the tunes represents, I don't know. The point is, remove the DPF alone does not give you much. But along with a tune that adapts to changed backpressure gives some added effect.
