A/C misery

I appreciate these threads, more than words can convey! Hoping one of the experts out there can offer up some troubleshooting tips.
Yesterday during the drive from Chicago to Cincinnati, and I noticed a red battery alert light in the dash. I was about 90 minutes from Chicago, and nearly same distance to Indianapolis. As I pulled off I65, the dash started displaying a barrage of errors, but thankfully I was able to pull into a gas station in Rensleer Indiana.
Popped the hood and saw A/C compressor had spilled it metal guts, shredding sepantine belt, and making my return home from an extended weekend getaway to Chicago as expensive as a trip to the Caribbean.
Google search led me to a place in Lafayette that could service the car. $280 for a flatbed tow, $160 hotel room, running tab at shop over. $2000 now, $60 for rental car to get my girlfriend home in Newport KY, and a phone call from shop owner saying all new parts installed, but A/C compressor will not activate. He's supposed to take a visual walk through the fuses and rule that out.
So my question is this, almost everything in this 2007 E90 has some type of computer module or controller, is there something that needs "reset" to activate the new OEM A/C unit?
Shop owner is allegedly from Germany, used to work in the manufacturing process over there, and for an Indianapolis BMW shop before starting his own Indy shop. Which may explain why his reviews on Google were mostly good, but the fact he's pushing 80 years old makes me think that some of these post 1990 vehicles are becoming more complicated for him to keep up with. He's got a goldmine in BMW, Porsche, VW, Mercedes and Audi parts there, too bad he's not open to cataloging and listing those parts that are still in demand.
Until then, if anyone has some helpful information regarding powering up a new A/C compressor, I greatly appreciate the advice!

Pulley & Bearing Replacement

Hi Guy's

There is replacement Pulley and bearings available for all the E9x models for E9x that need due to note or broken bearings etc as an example follow the following link:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/A-C-Compr...53.m1438.l2649

Hope this helps anyone looking to replace pulley and bearing rather than whole A\C unit

Thanks for the idea.. I am currently doing this. Works fine, just seriously sucks to drive with no AC. Currently searching for a cheaper AC compressor suggestions are appreciated.
I tryed 431k6 but i cant get it under the tensioner i think it might be too tight n i dont want to risk the band break is there a method you got it under the tensioner?

I've the same problem. Did you find the solution for that?

I've same problem with same engine. Noise disappeared when I remove the drive belt. Noise start's when the engine gets warmed up and running around 2k rpm.
Did you get that sorted?

my 320i is a 06-2007 (N46B20) model which I own from 2010. from years now i can hear a mechanical noise when car is idle or rolling especially with 2nd gear till 2.000rpm max.
noise is coming only when a/c compressor is NOT operating. so, when i have a/c on the noise stops.
at a BMW specialist I borough a shorter belt and isolated the a/c compressor and the noise disappeared immediately. So I am quite sure that the problem is coming from there. The issue is that when they tried to replace my a/c clutch they said that they saw the compressor in a mess and I should install another used one instead of mine.
I said no way since the noise disappears when a/c in on and also when it works it performs very very well.
I decided to have a go at a A/C specialist and when they saw it they said that our BMWs’ Calsonic Casei compressors they never had issues with their clutches and always the compressors go bad. But mine they said that is clearly performing great and I should leave it as it is till I have issues (forgot to mention that I already have done service to climate system a year ago and I used ti have that noise back then too).
So, I am concluding that it must be the bearing of the a/c clutch that does that noise. And when A/C is on probably the noise is changed due to forces on it and I am not able to hear it.
What I will do is buy a shorter belt (thanks a lot the friend here that claims that the 6pk 1660 will do the work, since the standard one is the 6pk 1870) and then I will remove the a/c clutch and will go to a bearing specialist shop (i.e. skf etc) and buy I brand new one for it.

I am waiting for your thoughts and help! If one knows what bearing I should buy for this then PleasE advise me!

Thanks and sorry for the long post!!!

I can confirm V3RVN's post. To my knowledge, it's not a BMW part # but you can find the compressor pulley on ebay. It's not super easy to remove the pulley but it works fine if the compressor is OK.

In my case, the internals had sheared off the pulley housing and the belt came loose from the engine resulting in power steering loss while driving. I would definitely replace it ASAP if it's making noise.

Thank you so much for this video. My gf's 130i started making the same sound. At first I thought this sounded as rod knock, I was already thinking about replacing the engine etc.. Turned out it was indeed the airco compressor.
