Pick up a cast piston and then a forged piston and you'll def know which is which. And the rods are forged steel, aluminum is NEVER a viable option on a street engine, much less a OEM warranteed engine. If in fact Audi is using an aluminum rod in something, I would love to know exactly how they are planning on doing the block swaps on a monthly basis. I don't know a helluva lot about the specifics of the DME or fueling system of the N54, but I AM a machinist by trade and can offer some incite into the why certain engine parts are used and others aren't. And with that said, I haven't disassembled an N54 or seen any pistons first hand so I have no idea if the pistons are forged. But i'll tell you this, forged rods and pistons are FAR higher on the list of must haves than a forged crank...

I had a shop open the motor up to determine any upgrade routes or to see how much HP it should support. They took the piston and compared it to some other cast BMW pistons. The pistons were forged and comporable to something like Wiseco.

If the shop was a good one(which i'd say it was) then id go with what they said. As far as Mahle saying they're cast? I think there was a miscommunication somewhere, IT MAKES NO SENSE to use cast pistons and a forged crank.

agreed, Mahle misunderstood the OP question, OP gave them out a late 2009 vin number and Mahle reply wasn't clear and "very possibly" referred to late model N54s (Dec 2009+)...

No question was dedicated or referred to the old built date N54... So...

Remember, 3 guys with earlier built date engines opened their engine in a reputable shops and got confirmed by their shops that pistons are forged.

I think that's enough as I agree with you, it make NO sense to use a cast pistons and forged crank.

I heard from my SA that the forged internals came with the sport package...

(<-- That means I'm kidding FYI)

Also, the same build date had a bolted diff, so maybe they changed during the switch to welded. Who knows.

Mahle can look up any part number they want, but they haven't looked inside the motor. Multiple shops that have pulled these N54 motors (including Cp-e at the time) have all confirmed these forged internals.
I can absolutely confirm that cp-e NEVER disassembled the long block. They removed the engine and trans to mock up a turbo inlet pipe and other parts which continue to be vaporware.

I lol'd. Thanks.

I think it would take a pretty experienced eye to spot the difference btw a forged and a cast piston without one or the other to directly compare it to. That said, lostmarine and numerous others have been running around on 500+ whp for a while and Shiv and Terry have literally beat the fuck out of their motors with no issues. Unfor hitting 660 is further evidence that this discussion is rampant speculation and fail. Until someone blows with "cast" pistons being the cause, you can all rest assured that your motors are bombproof.

Thanks boom.
Guys, BOOM is/was ? a cp-e expert. So they never disassembled the block , good to know.
But it does appear more and more the 2006 builds get the good shit, so to speak .
Personally, my car was making 660rwhp and the motor was taking it just fine.

I am by no means disputing what manufacturing process went into making our pistons. HOWEVER, Honda uses a boat load of forged cranks and cast rods and pistons.
