N55 down pipe fix found!

hey all. my first post. just wanted to let everyone know who may be interested in a DP fix for n55 motors. I believe no one has made a o2 sim for downpipes. I have a 2011 335i with n55 and I'm running a VRSF downpipe and no other mods beside CDV.

I have found this to work on my car with no check engine light for 80+ miles

http://www.amazon.com/Minicat-Sensor.../dp/B008UF1T2A

hope everyone finds this as useful as I did!

People have tried those and supposedly it will trip a CEL especially after hard driving. Let us know how yours works!

I just bought an AR catted downipe and my intention is to use one of these in the 90 degree version. I'm still going to use the cel clear function from stage 2+, but my intention is to flash back to stage 1 or stock a day or two before inspection, get the car to a ready state and drive it like a grandma until I squeak through emissions and flash back to a stage 2+ variant.

I don't think these are a long term cel solution but rather a device which in conjunction with a HFC and/or careful planning prior to inspection will allow you to skate through the obd2 portion. If you are subject to a visual as well you will still have to find someway around that, be it Benjamins, HFC or hollowed out stock down pipe.

Have you scanned with a OBD reader? I heard that while these may not trigger you SES light it will still show the o2 sensor as being in a "Not-Ready" state, thus potentially resulting in failed emissions testing.

That. I'm curious if it'll actually set the Cat monitor to "ready", before it trips a cat code..

I've had the 90 degree version on my car for about 7 months and several thousand miles. The CEL will still trip under hard acceleration but it keeps the light at bay during normal driving. I just have he JB4 autoclear

I have not scanned it to check readiness. I live in PA which requires these monitors to be set to pass emissions every year. I will scan it when I get off work to see if they set and I will let you know

I see it has that ceramic core insert but besides that you can just get a spark plug defouler for about $5 and it would do the same thing. It's hit or miss if it works and most CEL for downpipes won't occur until you put on a good 25-50 miles. Again, every car responds different, just some food for thought for others shopping around.

When I was running with no tune and a catless downpipe it would take a couple of hundred kms to trigger a code. So not sure this is actually doing anything.

This one from 42 Draft Designs are excellent and can be adjusted for length. Fits BMW applications.

OP when you hit 250 miles without a SES let us know. Within this time it will account for different types of acceleration and driving conditions.

If it works awesome, else it was worth a shot.

Looks like a regular o2 spacer to me.

The spacers with the little catalytic converter look promising but they apparently aren't quite up to the task.

It seems like they work alright if you drive the car moderately but once you start pushing some gas through the pipe, the o2 readings fall out of spec.

Maybe they need a larger cat inside the spacer.

Interesting.. OP can you scan your car to see if all sensors have reached readiness? Sometimes it does take a long time to cycle through all the drive parameters.

I know this is sort of off topic, but I am considering a JB4 and downpipe for my N55. Will I have an error code when installed? I didn't know that.

Yeah but if you get the JB4 you can clear them at any time or have it not come on at all.

For me I've been running a downpipe without tune and just deal w/ the engine malfunction warning all the time lol. I don't care. I just don't like the fact that the JB4 hijacks a bunch of sensors and it made my car run terribly. I would've gotten Cobb but they don't support my 2013 DME.

Oh gotcha, thanks for the insight. I am pretty close to deciding on the JB4 and DP. I read a lot about cobb and how it seems more aimed towards people interested in doing more vigorous tuning with the turbo and such. Not sure how true that is. JB4 just meets my needs well.

The JB4 will remove the code for you. The DP fix is really only needed if the car is going for an emissions test. The JB4 or COBB will remove the light for day to day driving, but for the N55 the JB4 is really the way to go as COBBs maps aren't as refined and developed for the N55 as they are for the N54.

Jb4 for sure. I've been running JB4 and Catless DP for thousands of miles. I have autoclear enabled so I don't get a CEL from the DP. Lots of power and great sound

Wow, was not aware of this at all. I am getting the tune last and that may be ass backwards but I am learning as I go. Totally on the fence about Cobb vs. JB4 and as I keep reading and learning I vacillate.

After reading this I lean more towards JB4. Man, this is a tough decision.

I can't live with the CEL so auto clear is critical but I am no closer to making up my mind.

Would get a DP today if it didn't' set a code.

Not to be argumentative or off topic, but can you please elaborate on the above bold statement?

I know Cobb n55 OTS maps leave something to be desired but the N54 maps are pretty much the same aren't they? I thought the consensus on this forum is that JB4 will get you what you want with one package but if you go Cobb you need to get a Protune to squeeze more power out of the Cobb maps whether you are n54 or n55.
