335i Shaking, smoking, sputtering violently this morning.

So I have the 335i 2008 with 63k miles. I go to crank it up this morning and its sputtering badly, shaking, and BLUE SMOKE!

NOTE: MY SA TELLS ME I HAVE THE LATEST HPFP!!!

Of course I gave it a couple of revs and sat in the driveway for a while. I HAD to drive it to work so I did, sputtering, smoking, and shaking the whole way.

Of course my dealership has zero loaners right now and they havent called me back.

I knew this would be a bad morning when I saw my glue trap had been moved to the middle of my kitchen floor this morning.

Ideas????

Blue smoke is a sign that the car is burning oil. could be your turbo charger is leaking? or worst valve or piston ring, but in 63k? seems a little too soon.

Classic misfires. Bet it sounded like a WRX. Lots of things can cause this. Most commonly it's a problem with injectors (or injectors and coils). You might get a set of plugs also.

Generally this is a one day job, provided you're able to get your car in in the morning. Sucks about loaners though, they never seem to have any for "surprise" things like this. I once had them rent me a Kia from Enterprise. That was a real treat.

Yeah yall seemed to describe the problem. It sounded like a WRX! Just with much less power.

I cant believe it happened all of the sudden. I sure hope my aftermarket warranty covers this.

Do you not think its the HPFP? Why not?

It's almost certainly not the HPFP. When the HPFP goes you get the CEL/Engine Malfunction (half engine) light and no crazy shakes/misfires...you just get your normal engine with no boost, which sucks but works fine.

With misfires (which, as I said before, have a variety of causes) you might get the half engine light but more than likely youll get the service engine soon (SES) light and the thing will shake like a dog shitting razor blades. Sometimes with misfires if you turn the car off/on to cycle they'll go away and eventually come back. With yours though it sounds pretty sudden/bad and unlikely to go away. It's probably some combination of coil/injectors/plugs. Easy fix if that's the case...

+1 Do you smell gas? Definitely injectors/coils/plugs. If the SES light stays on solid (or worse, flashes) dont even bother driving it to the dealer.

Next time shut the car off after a couple minutes and restart it should run fine.

I restarted it when the tow truck came. It was "better" but far from good. Still smoking and sputtering. Yet a little smoother. Either way its at my dealership now. Now Im making that long anxious wait for the call back from my SA.

Update: SA called and said they have already replaced the injectors in this car. So he still doesn't know what's wrong.

But its due for a brake fluid replacement for $180. Is that a rip off??

I'm curious what they charge for replacing the injectors.

Well idk because it was a recall and I don't think they will be doing that this time.

Maybe someone else can chime in on the injector price question.

Injectors for this car are about 115 bucks a piece plus labor. Figure 800 dollars total. Sounds like injectors too. If it is the extended should cover it.

Well my SA says that three injectors are bad. This is weird because they just replaced them under the recall not very long ago at all. So he said that BMW should take care of it.

Well he just left me a VM saying that his manager didn't know I had an extended warranty and to just charge that. That means I have to pay the $100 deductible!!! After he told me they would cover it. That pisses me off.

Not always, when my HPFP went out, I never fully limped but only partly and I did get crazy shakes at start up. I drove off, got the half engine light and drove straight to the dealer, as expected HPFP. Only signs prior, were elongated startups and crazy shakes at startup, car surged at idle. I could have sworn it was the injectors, went to the dealer, need for new HPFP.

Well I just got my car back. They replaced injectors in cylinders 1, 2 and 3. It runs fine now, but I'm waiting on my other injectors to go bad now too.

Is this a well known problem? Also, it worries me because nothing else was replaced except the injectors.. Well something caused all 3 of them to go bad at once, therefore, I'm thinking the problem lies somewhere before the injector. Yet they said they didn't know and didn't fix anything else.

So what makes more than one injector go bad at a time? Weird.

Yeah it was a used tranny from a car in New York that had been wrecked. Extended warranty replaces with like kind quality or something like that. It drives just fine so I'm sure there will be no issues.

But im sick of stuff going wrong with this car. Injectors and transmissions ought to NEVER go bad under 100k.
