Well, it's not at the dealer yet, so i'm not entirely sure, but I believe it's the switch everyone is talking about that has gone haywire. I haven't spilled anything on the center console or anything like that so I have no idea why it's malfunctioning.

Cylinder head replacement is due to the ticking that N52's experience.

Well I opened up my shifter and did not see any lose connections. I did read on another forum that it could be something in the electronics where is displays P R N D. If that is so, it means this is something electronic. As I mentioned earlier, I still can go into M1 M2... but just not DS. Could replacing the part in this photo I took be all I need?

How To Fix This

Guys! I figured it out! and it only cost 12 bucks to fix it completely!

Basically couple wires snapped and you just need to buy wires, electrical tape, and heat shrink.

If you look at the picture, find the wires where I circled it.. that's where it most likely snapped.
That's the sports mode/manual shift wires.

Here's a quick DIY.

Tools needed:
- Torx screw set (not sure what size, but one tiny one and one big one lol)
- Electrical tape
- Electrical wires (I bought 18 gauge wires, but find a thinner one)
- Heat shrink (for extra securing)

Time: 30~45 min

Difficulty: 6 out of 10 (the wires are so short!)

How to fix:
1. Remove shift boot and the connector (lift up the leather part)
2. Remove the Center Trim (you can find this on the DIY section)
3. There are 3 silver bolts that are holding down the shifter assembly, take that off (torx)
4. Wiggle the shifter assembly and lean it to your left
5. On the right side of the shifter assembly there should be three bolts (torx) remove them.
6. Now you have full access to the wires. (Make sure the wires are snapped or not.... but I'm pretty positive it's those wires)
7. Locate snapped wires and begin splicing with new wire, electrical tape, and heat shrink (FYI, the snapped wires are damn short)

How to check:
1. Put all the connectors back on
2. Make sure you have your E-brake on
3. Turn on car **REMEMBER TO HOLD THE BRAKE THE WHOLE TIME!!!!**
4. Put the car into DS and play with the Manual mode etc.
5. Make sure everything works
6. Put car back on P and turn off car and reassemble everything.

Worked for me!

PM me if you guys have any questions.

Is it possible to replace the wires instead of splicing?

Is this also related in any way to Manual Mode upshifting on it's own when you want to stay in lower gear? Noticed the other day that when I am driving around town in M3/M4 it will keep shifting up to M6.

Fixed as per Tommiexboi's instructions! Thanks.

The white wire in the wire bundle in my gear shift mechanism snapped causing me unable to use DS or M-Mode. In fact, the white wire was damaged at two sections. Now all's back to full working condition. The problem is definitely caused by fatigue from day-to-day use.

Just finished my buddy's. Three wire were split. The grey purple and green if im not mistaken. All of the wires had broken shielding on one side though which kinda worried me.

Already had a set of Torx drives so it cost me $2.30 (.99 electical tape and $1.30 for a 12 inch phone cord. Made little extensions from the small wires and connected the two sides together.

Works 100%. Great work Tommiexboi. And thanks xxxjecxxx for pointing me in the right direction. Already had the new shifter and was about to install it.

The phone wires contain 4 small wires (about 3/4 of the size of the wires being fixed).

my car is having the same issue, will not engage sport but I can use MT for a short period of time... the above guide is very ambiguous.... I only see one torx bolt in my shifter box and its that Huge one you see once you pop the cover off... where are these other six bolts this dude outlined?

Hey man could you please elaborate a bit more as to where those torx are located at? I can only see the big one on the center bottom but removing it does nothing.

Many thanks!
